        REPORT
Long Eaton Victoria AS fished their 16th Championship match of the season on the Old and New Canals at Rycroft Fishery (Hemington), having moved the match from a flooded River Soar at Kegworth for safety reasons. At stake was the Shipstones Cup, and two of the club’s brightest young stars dominated by filling the two top spots.

Unfortunately, due to the strong wind, most of the anglers fishing the New Canal found correct bait presentation ranged from difficult to impossible, and with the exception of the winner all the other top places came from the Old Canal where the wind was “off their backs”.

Top weight on the day was Jake Hemmings with a magnificent catch of 48-14 for a clear win. Jake, on Old Canal peg 2 had the least wind effected area on that lake and fished an excellent match. He caught from the “track” throughout the early stages of the match when the wind was at its worst, switching to the far bank in the latter stages. By switching baits between pellet, bread and maggots, Jake caught carp throughout, taking most of his fish in the latter stages.

On Old Canal peg 2 Tom Potter fished a similar match, catching down the track in the early stages before going tight over for a strong finish. Tom fished maggot throughout for his 29-02 mainly carp catch.

Dave Cotterill (Old Canal peg 17) took third place with 23-14, well ahead of Dave Kent (Old Canal peg 6) who led the rest of the field with 14-01.

With two matches to go the Championship remains wide open. Neil Stevenson has retained the lead with 220 points, but Dave Cotterill had closed the gap to only 10 points totalling 210. The next three are Mick Lager (189), Malc Munn (188) and Brian Leafe (183).

The next match (for the Jubilee Shield) is again at Rycroft, this time on the Carp Lake, Sunday 26th February, with the final match on 10th March on Carr Wood pool at Longford. Members should book a place with Dave Kent.
