TF_squattShimano Titanos 4500(£100) which is a mini pit or the Daiwa Calida 4000(£90)/Exceller plus 4000(£75) which is more of a large match reel. I use two of the latter and can easily do 100 turns now I have the right rod ( extra power 11/13) which is just as important.

TF_James_HI bought a Shimano Ultegra 5500XSB for this exact reason – wanting to consistantly punch a method 80-100yards using a typical 12ft match rod, 6lb sensor and 30-45gram methods.
The theory all seems to say the bigger spooled reel should gain me more distance, but I can hit the same distance using a TDX / TDR. It gains me nothing in the distance of the cast.
The only advantage I’ve found is on the retrieve, it obv takes less turns/time to retrieve the method (1 full turn of the TDX = 0.7m, 1 full turn of the Ultegra = 1.1m IIRC).

TF_carpmagicParticipantJames H, i find that really hard to believe. I have Ultegra XSB4500’s and i can cast a good 10-15 yards sometimes more further with the ultegra than my standard match reels.

Daddy BParticipantHi James, if you are not gaining any distance with the wider spool reel then that is probably a sign that you need a meatier rod for the job, in tandem with the reel.

TF_James_HSteve, I really don’t think the Ultegra gains me much, if anything. Saying this, I’ve only tested it when casting 60yards to a gravel bar & stumps which I was using as a marker, I’ve never tested it at distances greater than this so it may improve more with 60+ yards.
As for a heavier rod, the rod I currently use I wouldn’t want to change. It suits me fine for casting 30-45gr methods and in the action it gives when playing fish. Any heavier than this & the rod will become to stiff when playing fish. Thanks for the info though.
The thing I really don’t like is using the Ultegra on my method rod, then picking up the pellet waggler rod with the TDX/TDR. It takes some getting used to going from a small pit reel to a TDX/TDR within consecutive casts.

TF_squattJames H if your only going shortish distances use your TDX’s. For the long chuck use your mini pit reel but not with a softish 12 ft rod, buy something that is up to it – 100 yards is a long way.

Squatt, I don’t think I explained myself too well.
I’m confident in saying I can consistantly cast a method as long as any other angler I fish with, and I fish with some top method anglers. What I was trying to explain was that whether it be with my Ultegra, or my TDR/TDX, I can still acheive the same distance.
To put it simply, if I was to buy another reel for method fishing at 70-90yards, I would probably buy another TDX knowing what I do now.

TF_carpmagicParticipantI use the Ultegras a lot for both Bream and Carp and as i have already said they have added valuable yards to my casting. They are also great bagging waggler reels when distance is key.

TF_dendraThe 4500,s will be ample for chucking and cranking heavy feeders back.

TF_carpa22ParticipantTarka at the end of the day a lot of it is down to technique which i think steve will agree with, big reels, big rods, all assist in the casting process. Maver Pairs last Saturday at barston young lad casting to the island long chuck side ( a proper chuck) all he was using tdr reel and 12ft carbonactive rod on the button every chuck.

TF_carpmagicParticipantcarpa22, if your technique is good these mini big pit type reels will put a few extra yards on your cast though.

Foster’s of Birmingham had a reduced price on the Ultegra 4500XSB, £100 IIRC.

TF_wiggley wormif youre not casting any further with the ultegra it may be the rod itself rod lengh action and first ring spacing can all have an effect eg carp rods have 5 or 6 rings with alarge bore to help funnel the line through if the first ring is small and closer to the reel the line slaps the ring causing friction and slows the line down

TF_squattThe Shimano 4500 & 5000 are the same size reel, it’s just the depth of spool is different. IMO go for the 4500 .

TF_fred van den feederlook at this reel.Zammataro Feedermaster. Its made for feeder fishing with thinner lines, 200m 0.10. I have found that alot of bigpit reels are made for thicker lines, 0.35 or so, and when you put thin braid on they dont put the line on good. some time the braid cuts down in the spole. That makes the line to slow down when leaving the spole the next time you cast.
Here is a link to a shop that sell them
If you are after a longrange feeder rod, look at the Spro Leo Koot range. insane, love mine!
