Long Rods , top end Preston Excel vs TriCast John Allerton

Looking to get a 17ft rod for pleasure float fishing deep swims on rivers like the Thames .

Needs to be light and balanced enough for holding for long periods standing up . I’m sure they will both handle the unexpected monster but I also want it to be fun for decent 6oz silvers .

Want something which will last a long time which is why I’m expecting to have to go for the top end .

The Preston Innovations Carbonactive Excel 3 piece 17FT looks awesome but I’m wondering whether it will be too meaty for the smaller stuff to remain fun .

The Tri-Cast John Allerton Premier Match 17FT 4 piece seems to have been around longer and to have been the standard by which all others were judged .

Has anyone used both of them ? How do they compare ?

What min/max line strengths would you use ?

Are they geared to silvers or larger fish ?

Are there any other makes of comparable quality I should be looking at ?

Bought the tricast last year for the trent national,very light and balanced with a brilliant action which is probably more suited to silvers very soft through action

I believe that the Shakespeare LXL range might be worth looking at as they come in double lenghts by virtue of an extension section. without looking to confirm, I also think there are options from Daiwa and Milo, too.

I have the Shakey LXL 14/18 – it’s an awesome piece of kit – check it out, I think it will be exactly what you’re after

I got my Shakey LXL a couple of seasons ago for the same reasons that you explain and it is a lovely rod at that length.
The weight was the main issue for me at that time and it came down to the Allerton and Shakey rods in the end. The Shakey won as it was alot cheaper!

The long shakey rods kills my wrist. Can’t use it for 5 hours straight

Striebs, IMO there’s not a better long rod on the market than the Allerton’s. I’ve got three models (13″, 15″ and 17″) and they’re all superb.

I’ve also got a couple of MAP Ultra 2’s that I use for Bolo work and they’re very good as well although a bit heavier. Might be worth you having a look on eBAY.

The Daiwa 17/20ft River has to be on your shortlist. Borrowed my mates last year and will have one for the autumn river matches on Thames.
