TF_april9092ParticipantA bit harsh. It is still not in the shops today Saturday, I only like the Stan Piecha column has it makes me laugh like the magazine used to years ago with Chris Love and a few others.
I would like to see a few features on our rivers with up to date information on fishing prices access or a complete breakdown of the lets say the river trent broken down into sections or the river severn or any river so you could cut it out and explore some of the forgotton parts of our weonderful countryside. I am up for it if you are Dave Harrell. -

TF_Waveney OneThe story I heard about how Stan got to be the F1 correspondent for the Sun is the following:
He was the Angling Correspondent producing a once a week article. Stan was in the general office handing in his script for the week when the Sports Editor stormed into the open office asking if anyone had a passport. Stan shouted out that he had and was taken outside by the Sports Editor. It appears that for some reason the F1 correspondent who had been in the job for a while was unable to go to cover the Brazilian Grand Prix. Stan was on the next plane out to Rio and kept the job for a long while.
I bet he was brilliant at drawing pegs as well!

Yup, have been subscribed to both match fishing and pole fishing for about 5 months and in that time one of each hasn’t arrived.
Give them their due though, each time just gave them a call and another copy was here 2 days later.
Don’t know why they seem to have such problems with distribution, have bought mags of all kinds over the years some of them pretty obscure and never had this problem with any of them.
-
31/05/2010 at 10:50 pm #106219
TF_pr@nglerBest solution of all is not to buy either match fishing or APF.
I subscribed to both for over 10 years. I’ve given up both and have the money to spend on better things. Best part of it all is that I catch more fish.
I used to think journalists were the laziest profession on earth. Now I realise that not all journalists are the same.
Coarse fishing journalists are the laziest profession on earth. Except that they’re not professional . . .

Thats abit strong aint it!!
I think the lads at both magazines do a good job, they can’t keep everyone happy. To be fair both magazines have improved over the last couple of years. In the five months i’ve had a subsription i’ve not yet had a late issue either.

DaveHarrellParticipantI can only apologise for the distribution problem which is totally out of our hands. I have been assured that the magazine will be available in next few days.
And pr@ngler, if you actually knew how much hard work goes into producing all of the magazines at DHP you wouldnt come out with such utter crap. All of the staff from every magazine work their balls off to produce consistently good magazines that an awful lot of people enjoy. Your comments are out of order as I’m sure many anglers who appreciate the hard work we all put in will agree. Good luck in the World Championship, hope you win. -

TF_LouiseWincottMatch Fishing should be on sale nationally from today. Some areas will have received copies over the weekend.
Our previous distributor went into administration a week ago and it took some time for our new distributors to pick up the reins.
Those of you that have been into newsagents looking for your monthly fix may have noticed other gaps on the shelves. We will survive the distributor going bust but some publishers will not. I have heard horror stories of weekly magazines (not in the angling sector) being stuck in warehouses for two weeks!
I hope this explains the situation and also explains why subscribers got their copies as normal.Sorry for any inconvenience and just glad to still have a job!
Regards
Roger Mortimer using Louise’ log in!

TF_GavinI think slagging the mags is a bit strong. I stopped buying Pole Fishing mag long before the name change. Bored a few months ago waiting about for the other half I picked a copy up and under Jon Arthur I think the mag has improved markedly! So much that I’ve picked up a few copies since!
Thanks for clearing the issue up Roger, I may take a wander later to pick my copy up, as I missed my Saturday fix of the mag even more with no footie on at the mo!

TF_yorkshirei wonder what the distribution cost is, or price per magazine, quite a big job delivering the mag?
I normally comment on content and will make comments once i have read it, was available from today in most areas.
cover price of £3.50 is a bit strong, just noticed this Cheapest option – £3 for three issues followed by Direct Debit payment. Total price for the first 12 issues is £26 odd. Includes 12 mags delivered to your door. Only available for postal applications because of the Direct Debit forms.
which is very very good value, even with the rotton plugging of brands is still a good buy at this level, delivered to your door!!!

They were there doing a feature for pole fishing mag and having the £1 bet which they have!, and up and till 4pm they hadnt stopped taking differant photos of the two of the venues locals, so i seen just how much work goes in to the features in the mags, i left to go out for tea, at 7.40 and they were still there!i think jon won the £1 as he was catch some big barble!

TF_Billy no FishParticipantI seldom post here now but can’t resist for this. It is my pleasure to have met Jon Arthur, Pat MacInnes and Fordy. All very professional, dedicated and working in different disciplines. All more than willing to help and promote angling. Not met Mark Sawyer yet but he posts regularly on MFS and seems to know his stuff too.
Fordy has just given up a day on the Glebe as he has to work on editing for Fisho. I had a day out with Jon Arthur after bidding in a charity auction and he couldn’t do enough for us. Pat was there too taking photos all day. Quality people giving a lot to our sport. My opinion only but i think they do a sound job.

TF_pr@nglerThanks for taking the time to reply Dave. It was certainly the case that Matchfishing improved when you took over as editor and I remember writing that on this forum.
None the less I do have concerns about coarse fishing mags. Just some of the reasons for that include:
* Features in mags often over-emphasise tackle rather than the decisions and choices the anglers make to respond to the conditions on the day. Of course the gear is important, if buying the right gear was the main criterion we’d all fish for England (!). But its those skills and decisions that make a really good angler.
* On the subject of tackle, is it still the case that some mags only review products if the manufacturer pays for advertising space in the mag?
* Don’t some mags have an editorial policy of not saying anything bad about products they review? If that’s the case, what does a good review mean?
* How often do we see a group of products compared side by side with a clear indication of which is the best, which is the best value etc?
* Many of the qualities we want in our gear are objective and easily measured (think of pole stiffness, balance, recovery etc). Mags tend to describe these things by impression rather than by measurement, yet there have been loads of calls on here for objective measurements. Why doesn’t it happen? There was a story on here about six years ago that a mag did start to make objective measurements of tackle quality and one of their advertisers threatened to pull their adverts from the mag.
* Mags in other sports (I’m thinking of my wife’s triathlon mags, which is a smaller sport than angling) manage to do these things
* An anecdote. About 5 years ago a mag published something that was scientifically wrong about tackle design. I emailed the editor privately (he’d written the piece) giving him the chance to correct it in a later issue without losing face. Not only did he not do that, he never had the good manners to reply, which would have cost him about ten key strokes.I’ll never be a quarter of the angler you will ever be, but I paid a lot of money for fishing mags over the years and the points above disappoint me.

AnonymousHad my Match fishing a week now, pole fishing since Friday both great reads but i must admit they seem to be a few extra pages every month of the “Dragon carp and Ultimate adverts” of which i dont care for IMO
As for distribution Dave you can blame them but its for DHP to manage. Maybe you need to contract someone else for this because it seems you may have lost a few sales……
IMO Subscibe…only had one issue, resolved in a few days!
Would like to see some Guru products in a subscription package as well LoL.

TF_iansi01354I agree with many replies, I would recommend subscribing, you get preferential rates and added value extras (can’t quite call them “free” gifts but still a good deal)
I have subscribed for 10 years and never yet had a problem, I simply take the gift on one mag and get a discount on the other mag every year, a good deal, a good read and no shopping trips for me, as to me being a better angler….maybe but its more entertainment and a bit of education…..
As to the comments about journalists…..I am a bit gobsmacked really. Laziness is surely about the individual not the profession itself if you truely wanted to be objective!

TF_pr@nglerKevin, its possible to make a generalisation about a group whilst recognising that there are individuals within the group who don’t fit the generalisation, so I wouldn’t tar everyone with the same brush. We could for instance say that on average, angling journalists don’t have red hair, but not be very surprised to see one who does.
As for Pat, well I’ve tried really hard to understand what you mean, but I just don’t get it. I can only think that you are trying to be sarcastic. Even in an ironic sense I fail to see what your quip about being objective means.
As I have told you before, I bought DHP mags (Coarse fishing, Match Fishing and APF) for nigh-on 20 years. Aren’t you even the slightest bit interested in reflecting on criticisms made by such a long term customer?
-
06/06/2010 at 9:34 pm #106739
TF_GALPSI have to say that i have been a subscriber to several course angling magazines over the past 10 years and i can honestly say that i feel they have improved immensly!
I have had to reduce my subscription to just Match Fishing due to finances, however, i did not stop my other subscriptions due to poor content!
The effort that must go in to making that magazine content month after month and still keep a strong following clealry isnt done by anything other than hard work!
Keep it up chaps, im right behind you!

Not Professional – Don’t Work Hard – Easy Life – Yer right!!!
If you want good quality features, you have to be on the bank when the fish are biting and if that means at the crack of dawn or at last knockings, so be it!
Over the last few months I have been on 300-mile-plus round trips, which include 4am or 5am starts (that’s on the bank), plus 10pm finishes, which meant I arrived home at 12.30am.
So as you can see it’s not a Monday to Friday,9 to 5 job – often, when the angler cannot make a weekday, we will go out on a Saturday if needed.SO Not Professional – Don’t Work Hard – Easy Life. Can you do any better?
Rant over. I feel so much better now I’ve got that off my chest!

TF_Patrick MacInnespr@ngler, don’t take yourself seriously all the time.
Yes, you obviously have some strong opinions and make some valid points but take a step back and look at how you address folk and you’ll see why people get defensive and sarcastic etc… sometimes you come across a tad too full-on 🙂
