Its been like it for a couple of weeks. I think they were all ready to spawn mid June but suddenly it cooled down. They seem to have been trying to spawn but its been too cold. After the warm weather over the weekend the carp spawned on our lake Sunday. That said its going to cool down again then warm up for the weekend so I think we may have a few more days before things start to get back to normal.
That said I had 2 cracking days this weekend at Glebe Saturday 200lb plus and 100lb in a match yesterday at Messingham. All the fish were in shallow water as they are trying to warm up to spawn.

yeah ant,in 5 summer league matches(on natural venues) the fishing has been very poor.only broke a kilo once 🙁 🙁 .been blanks on the river don and aire and calder canal which is unheard of at this stage of the season.

Sadly it’s not just the fishing that seems to be up and down but the fish seem to be suffering in this area. Furzton and the surrounding lakes have lost bream in some numbers with Furzton losing nearly 200 according to the bailiff. Most matches late last month were won with just afew bream. No other fish seem to be affected and the roach are showing well in parts with a match being won will 18lb of redfins. The bream deaths have been put down to spawning exhaustion apparently and look to be in the same year class.(not that there is any bream much above 6lb in fuzton). Last year was a great bream year as was the last very wet summer no wonder they do so well in Ireland.

The natural venues are really suffering the effects of the changing weather. Winter seemed to go on forever and spring never really sprung this year. After the excess rain last year the natural cycle of breeding in the wild is really proving difficult for our fishy friends. No doubt this is causing stress and mortality. I know its not everyones cup of tea but on managed fisheries such as Glebe and many others, good fishery management mitigates some of these effects.
The fishery owner at Messingham took some carp from out nets a few weeks back to breed on in his fish farm. Just one more example of good management.
I really fear for our wild fisheries, we really need some settled weather for things to stabilise and then start to recover, there seems little to suggest its going to happen.

I think Managed fisheries are the way forward most definitely I know we probably all hate to admit it, I think there’s some environmental factor underpinning why natural venues don’t regenerate as well as they used to do, look at the Trent & fishing in Ireland that’s just 2 examples that aren’t even a patch on what they were.
