Do we as anglers think about nets enough and does it matter?

Landing nets – an essential but cheap bit of kit. Whilst strength of the frame seems most important characteristic there seems to be more focus on weight and net material. I know high speed scooping relies on light material but isn’t be all and end all. Given the rise in large commercial carp sure now strength of frame is the priority?

What are others using and looking for?

Keepnets – prices on keepnets range loads but even though fish safety should be paramount there are a range of materials used and seems as much geared towards coloured metal edges and massive makers names being viewable. Whilst I get the appeal of this it obviously doesn’t help you catch more or help the fish. Therefore is it best to get cheaper nets (that are probably made in same factories as major brands) as long as they are fish safe and just renew more often?

What are others using and looking for?

        Cheers

Some 40 years ago Dave Downes of Likely Lads fame wrote something along the lines of …’think about landing nets and keepnets just once then focus on the stuff that really matters’.
Still good advice but having said that it is one of those areas where those of us who do not fish for carp on commercials can struggle – especially for landing nets as many of the so called silverfish nets have such a fine mesh you need the arm of a female Russian shot putter to net a 6oz roach from the Trent.

All nets should be made with smaller bottom 3 rings and pull through handles I you see the hassle when weighing in and people rolling fish down nets when out of the water . Terrible !!
