TF_spotter1707Matchbox. Good quality & no silly prices! I also think they are made in England.
Regards Peter. -

TF_rb211got to be Rive may be expensive but will last you a life time . Matchbox was made in uk but think you will find they are not any more come from where majority of our tackle comes from china.

AnonymousMate, ive got a rive d36, the drawer handles have bust off both the front drawer and under seat drawer, the underseat drawer jams if your sitting on the seat, the adjustable legs handles are shocking, overtighten them and youve knackered them, steer well clear. Also the sliding footplate tends to catch the strap holders and you end up having to move them so that you can get the footplate all of the way out.
Also the carrying strap, hooks on, in four places and is a bad design too.
It is comfortable though but never worth the massive money that it is sold for… -

AnonymousAnother vote for Matchbox. Had one six years with no problems and it’s rock steady. Another bonus is that it actually has a ‘box’ that you can put bait boxes and other bulky stuff in. Really don’t see the point of these boxes with either 20 odd drawers or five or six drawers and a big gap of fresh air underneath.

TF_vicci5consider the si wi quad box it has had rave reviews, is very sturdy and is a fantastic box all round with tons of features. I have just listed a complete package in the for sale section only selling because it is slightly too high for me at its lowest seating setting which hinders me when using the pole.

AnonymousSame as Matchace. Rive D36 is a top box. Would not consider any other box now.

TF_Time TravellerThe D36 looks impressive, but the price !!!! I know someone will say you get what you pay for…….my first house was only £2,700 cant live in the bl@@dy box can you?
Whatever you buy better shop around a bit….me I’m looking as well, had a Milo for 5 years absolutely sound but heavy, that was around £500, wont be changing it for double the price that’s for sure.
If you pay over a grand, give yer head a bang, better get a wicker basket with a few tupperware tubs in it….. I suppose the manufacturers will price at what the market can stand, but there is some price fixing in there when you look across the shops, if it was British Gas or BP we would be after them…..what’s the margin on these now +60% ????
Same for poles of course, sorry if it digresses from the main post but have we gone crazy?

TF_AdamgParticipantLots of people will tell you differently but when it comes to poles you won’t go wrong with daiwa or Tri Cast.

AnonymousAint hardly any difference between £500 poles and. £3000 poles at 13m, if you fish them no further than 13m most of the time, anything will do, you just need flagship poles for 14.5m and further,or if you really need to look tidy !!!!!

TF_KennybOn my second Rive, however would never buy another.
I think I was following fashion when I started to fish the commercials. Like a previous poster had a few problems with the handles snapping on the draws and also the tightening knobs until I bought the metal ones of ebay ,they have made a lot of difference. The worst problem is the draws not fully opening when sat down. A number of my mates have changed to the new Matrix at half the price of the Rive and also a few have changed to the Octbox and are raving about them as we are back fishing natural venues and need more stability when out in the water and don’t want to use a platform. I think the only way to chose is to speak with fellow anglers and try to try someone’s when you are out on the bank.
Keep posting
Keep smiling

AnonymousKennyb, i too have had a mate make me some aluminium knobs for the legs and they have performed very well, but i feel that a box in excess of £1000 should have been made far better than what rive have achieved, they seem to have released the boxes onto the market without any trials and with cheap finishing pieces,i would never buy a rive at the moment again until they started using superior parts on them instead of going for massive profit on each box….
They sell well because of the branding ,lots of anglers feel better if they look and use the top stuff,im the same, but once youve had some of these items, and you see just how many problems you get with them, you realise that other anglers cheaper stuff performs just as well -

TF_PrawnkingI have the Matrix superbox ,I like the modular construction and with the H frame can add a couple of drawers for the evening canal matches without having to carry a large framed box. The Matrix drawers and trays are well built and there is a wide choice of accessories too!

TF_wightanglerhave to say i myself derided the Octbox until i sat on one and compared how much comfier(adjustable seat height) and functional it was by comparison with my old space-station- cheaper copy of the old Rive D25.
Octbox seem to constantly be upgrading and introducing functional new off box and existing accessories. Practical safe function rather than style and a good but relatively unchanged frame and format should be the yardstick imo.

TF_paulnewellI used to visit the unit in Alcester when Clint Elliot owned Matchbox . That’s where they were first made . Then he made the dissision to up sticks for the job at Whiteacres . Jim Burton bought the buisness and he first made them in a small unit near Alvechurch football ground . Jim and others improved what was already a good box . Fairly sure Jim went up the Chinese route and nothing’s British . Still a very good box for the coin . Neads guttering cause when it peas down it gets in the draws . A good hint to clean them ! 😀 😀 😀

TF_rb211At the end of the people can advise you on what’s good and what’s not all down to your own choice I have had a few different boxes over the years and they all have problems I have my rive a few years now and yes the draws stick when you sit on it but its the most sturdy and comfortable out of all the boxes I’ve had .A few people on here say about the matrix box and that’s the same the draws don’t open when your sitting on it .

TF_caster robParticipant@ Time Traveller
“sorry if it digresses from the main post but have we gone crazy?”Like having to transport so much kit in barrows or trolleys, assembling mini-scaffolding systems as part of the preliminaries, the use of power tools on the bank to prepare bait.
You decide.
