By the way, that stuff Des was using on his ice breaker was 0.11 Ultima Power Steel.

At the end of the show Keith points out that no anglers were on the ice whilst breaking it.
I think he says “because they are experienced”
does that mean that they’ve learned from their mistakes?
I seem to recall an article in match fishing many years ago when certain Dorking stars amongst others were on the ice with chainsaws !

I have also fished against Dorking at Willow when virtually everyone was ON the ice cutting out swims!

It’s simply that things have moved on.

John Raison said sometimes he’s been out in a boat with a chainsaw to cut the ice, but reckons that’s seriously dodgy. One mistake when it’s like that, you could fall in and either catch your death, get hypothermia or similar.

What the lads were doing last weekend was still fecking dangerous – but everyone’s keeping an eye out for each other, which was really nice to see.

Every time they brought their ice breakers back in, their platforms were splashed with water, which was freezing up around their feet. You need to know what the dangers are to avoid them causing you problems.

Having said all that, I’d love to have a go at it now having seen it.

Next Friday there will be a film on chub fishing on the Loddon, near Reading with Duncan Charman. Really good fun and there was still 8” of snow on the ground yesterday.

By the way, if you want previous shows, you can download them from itunes as a podcast these days.

We used to break the ice a lot down on the Regents Canal years back,Dishyfish will remember, you always had your regulars, prepared with their breakers & the rule was if you borrowed it from them & lost it,you’d have to go in for it or replace it,Paul Burroughs was always a cert for losing it.The times he stood on one end & lost his footing or failed to tie a loop in the end that he had put around his leg were uncountable.Absolute quality!!
We had all sorts of ice breakers from clutch plates to sash weights & never failed to catch on the punch or worm………..halycon days.

Good to see such recklessness seems to be a thing of the past, unlike those idiots who tried to drive their car along a frozen canal as a short cut the other day !

decaff your still reminiscing again lol. I remember them days well. I used to spend a age creating a nice gap out to about 6 to 8m set up ect. Then to walk along the bank in amazement, and see the like of the Vincents Derek young Vasey ect and saw they had broken their ice so they could fish their peg at 13m plus These boys use to practice ice breaking (thats dedication) and boy they were good at it, but we always caught a few fish!! Not to mention the funny looks we got from the passers by. I had a look at the canal a couple of weeks ago, and Neil I had a flash back of them days and remember we used to think the joggers running on them freezing cold days were mad lol.

me and my mate went on lindholme on friday and had to break a good 3-4 ins of ice.
only trouble was we were using 2 towballs bolted together on a chain and rope which was’nt quite heavy enough.
does anyone know the best place to get one of those sash window weights from?
( and yes it was -3 and yes we did still catch! )

I had 11lb 15oz of roach which was only good enough for a default section win. A few dodgy pegs as expected but in the main it fished its boobies off. Proper fishing!
