TF_Waveney OneWe had a brilliant day Saturday in the silver fish match at Suffolk Water Park with 22lb 12oz winning it, 4th had 12lb 0oz. No frost overnight but the following day on the same lake was really hard! Half the 16 anglers blanking and some of the same pegs were used.
At last a match to report on and it was quite a match really.
Only 10 people made it in the end but there were some good weights. Water Temp was 4.3C on peg 36 where I was drawn. It was warmer all night (5.9C) than it was by the time we started when it 5.1C and by the end of the match at 3pm the temperature had fallen to 4.5C. The wind was mostly Northerly with a touch of West at times and varied between 7mph and 10mph. Air Pressure was 1020 fairly steady. For those fishing tomorrow, I only heard of one carp being hooked and lost. Drizzle early and a very grey damp day all round.
It appears from the weights that most of the fish were in the late 20’s and early 30’s with the first 4 anglers sitting in a line but their tactics varied to some extent and that well account for the difference in weights.
1st John Dale from Ipswich who is no stranger to the podium especially on the silver fish matches. John fished soft pellet on the hook and fed pellets on peg 32. Included within his bag of fish were some nice skimmers to 1lb 8oz. Total weight was 22lb 12oz.
2nd Reece Page, Gipping Valley Angling Club on peg 31. Unlucky Reece who was on the Golden Peg was winning the match for possibly the first two hours but John slowly caught him up. Reece also had some of the bigger skimmers on pellet and maggot in his net and weighed 15lb 15oz
3rd Darren Clarke, Dynamite Baits, fished pellet and maggot on peg 30 for a total weight of 14lb 2oz
4th Bob Wessels, Suffolk Water Park, fished caster and some very nice roach and perch from peg 29 and weighed in 12lb 0oz.
5th Chris Sykes, on peg 27 weighed in mostly skimmers for 6lb 12oz
6th Ron Bignold, from Hornchurch, had a large bream and a big skimmer right the death on worm that bosted his weight to 5lb 5oz.Open on Sunday 24/1/10 – M1
What can I say, after a veritable feast of bites yesterday, they were very few and far between today. Why? I’m not sure really, the water temperature was actually 5.1C today as against 4.3C yesterday. I can only put the difference in the response of the fish down to the fact that the water level on M1 had come up 4 inches over night!! Platforms that were quite dry yesterday had an inch or so of water over them today.
Minimum overnight temperatures were 2.2C but only for an or so this morning about dawn but there was no frost and most of the night the temperature was above 3C. Daytime high was 3.9C The wind, or at least a lack of it didn’t help I am sure, it was West Nor West and the max speed was 7mph and at times it seemed almost calm with no ripple to be seen. Air pressure was steady at 1023. The water was pretty clear but no clearer than yesterday.
Odd large fish made all the difference in the results as there were very few fish of any size to be caught. Only 16 people fished today.
1st Peter Dade, Harleston & District AC on peg 6. Peter fished an open ended feeder and started on sweetcorn. He had a tench very early in the match that weighed over 6lb. He managed to land a few small skimmers during the match and ended with 7lb 6oz for a very convincing win.
2nd Richard Watson, Nisa Waveney, on peg 5 had a bream that weighed 4lb 7oz and a small roach for a total weight of 4lb 8oz
3rd Steve Waters had one carp down the edge on a feeder from peg 26 for 3lb 7oz.
4th Kim Hollick, Nisa Waveney Juniors, had 3 skimmers for 2lb 12oz on peg 7
5th Mark Nash had 4 skimmers on peg 32 for 2lb 3oz
6th = Alan Hatterell and Garry Hollick both with 1lb 14oz. Alan had 2 skimmers and a roach and Garry had a tench. There were quite a few blanks and plenty of people never made a bite. But that is fishing for you, one day the fish feed and the next for some reason they switch off.
