Rutland Water continues to excel with anglers from all over the UK, including those fishing in last weekend’s Lexus European Team Championship, praising the quality and condition of the fish compared to other waters. Fish are taking dry fly and nymphs and contributing to excellent bag weights. Both arms of the reservoir have started to produce fish as well as the main basin at the moment. Fish are feeding on corixa, snails, large red buzzers, fry and sticklebacks. Bank anglers are starting to take fish along the weed beds. These areas are best fished with a single fly with either a nymph or a fry pattern.

The best brown recorded last week fell to season ticket holder Ron Gent from Leicester who weighed in at 5lb 13½oz. The best brown fell to Welsh angler Dean Kibble fishing for Nymph – a – Maniacs in the Lexus Team event on Saturday. Dean hooked into a super conditioned 5lb 12oz fish.

Prospects look very good. With good water clarity fish are not feeding hard, although plenty of food is available with an increase in buzzer hatches. It shouldn’t be long before we see hatches of Daddy Long Legs on the water.

Best rainbow 5lb 12oz taken by Dean Kibble fishing in the Lexus team event on Saturday.

Best brown 5lb 13 5/8oz taken by Ron Gent of Leicester.

Best boat areas Bottom of both arms and the main basin.

Best bank areas Normanton, Sykes Lane, Whitwell, Sailing Club and New Zealand Point.

Best methods Bank – floating line with nymphs, dries and fry patterns.
Boat – As bank but include various sinking lines with mini lures and gold/silver sparklers.

        Lexus European Team final
Twenty two teams headed to Rutland to fish this two day final. Ospreys came out on top on day one with 41 fish for 89lb 10oz – quite a way ahead of second placed Kent and Sussex Fly Fishers with 30 fish for 70lb 2oz. Day two saw the tables turned with Greys G-Tec Stocks winning with 21 fish for 51lb 10oz. Ospreys could only manage 14th place with 10 fish for 23lb 7oz.

However, Ospreys outstanding performance on day one ensured that they clinched the title with 51 fish for 113lb 1oz. Consistency over the two days paid off for BRFFA Team Orvis and Alba Orvis FF. A small margin divided them into second and third with BRFFA Team Orvis finishing with 44 fish for 111lb 10oz and Alba Orvis FF weighing in 44 fish for 107lb 3oz. The best fish was taken by Dean Kibble(Nymph-A-Maniacs) and weighed in at 5lb 12oz. Chris Guthrie (Greys G Tec Stocks) took the best bag at 33lb 8oz with time bonus all caught on tiny dries down the north arm

Scarlett Hodgson accepted the trophy on behalf of Ospreys. This was a fitting and poignant tribute to her late father David who fished for Ospreys.
