Saw my first newt today in years.
Used to be loads when I was young so i was dead chuffed to see one.
Is it just me or are there hardly any of them left?

Appear to be rare as hens teeth.
          What sort, Common? Great Crested?
Found a great crested about 3 years ago, and a common about 10 years ago, but i have not seen one since then.
          Great looking little beasties though.

Looked very much like this (it was a baby) although the gills which were still external, like on this one, were whiter…

I have been fishing for the best part of 40 years now and I am not sure if I have ever seen a newt whilst by the river or at a commercial. But being a gardner I find newts on a regular basis in the gardens I maintain. Last year when working on a garden pond I found a male crested newt that was a real beauty it was 6 inches long I thought it was a Salamanda!!! But rest assured there’s still a good few about. Cheers Chris.

Great crested newts are fairly rare and a governed by various laws! Ponds or lakes where they habitat are generally sites of scientific interest! And there are also implications with planning consent within certain distances of them!
