TF_JohnHWould I be correct in assuming that Des, Steve, john and Grant were all at the lodge end of the lake? Will was just a little further up and steve just a little further away still.
If so for some reason all the fish were down at that end, had the prevailing wind been pushing down there cos this is unusual?
From my recollection this end of the lake is a bit shallower as well. -

TF_JohnHBy lodge end I meant to say the fishing lodge end.

TF_carpmagicParticipantJohn, the top 6 were all tackle shop end of Jennys. For some reason this is where the fish were. Will was around permanent peg 9 and noone really caught past him. Des was the first peg to the left as you walk up from the shop. Grant was end peg on the lodge bank sort of opposite Des, John bradshaw was next to him and Steve Saunders next to John. Wind was blowing the other way.

TF_JohnHHi Steve thanks for the feedback. Jennies is normally pretty good all over so this result is a bit strange. With the wind being in the opposite direction what do you think made the fish go where they did?
I know the event was televised so there would have been more than normal disturbance but fish at W/A must be used to this with the pressure all the lakes get.
The bank to Des’s left would have been empty which may be a factor but also if you consider fisho at Hayfield has been won from the same corner peg twice with the empty bank to the angler s left. The opposite peg has also thrown up good weights as well so the similarities are spooky.Just maybe to even things up and to take away the end peg advantage maybe ANO angler who is not in the match should be stationed at the end of the matchlength to act as some sort of stopper but is this taking things too far?
As good an angler as Des is I sort of get the feeling that any of the competitors on his peg would have won or come very close, what do you top rods think are you happy to leave it to the luck of the draw?
Well done by the way for winning the festival the week before, if I recall all the family picked up as well you guys obviously have it sussed!! -

TF_AnthonywatersParticipantI think you have to praise all 24 anglers i would be happy for life if i even made the top 24 ! well done all

TF_JohnHAnthony, the top 24 seems to contain the same list of anglers every year give or take 3 or4. Macho seems to have burst onto the scene after not fishing W/A that much. Alan Scothorne I believe was down but did not make the final, so that tells you how much in tune and how good these guys really are.
I know W/A has some poor pegs, the fact the list stays the same tells you everything, these guys are at the top of their game and take some beating.
If you fancy your chances get practicing. -

TF_JohnHAnthony, I know what you mean about not fishing enough but frankly if I retired today and fished at W/A evey day for the next 5 years I still dont think I could break into this top 24. Its just not about pratice and being in tune these guys have some skills you cant buy and can read situations very quickly.

TF_AnthonywatersParticipantThey know the current trends john, and their really accurate thats the key i have fished festivals but one thing i will add is ive only ever seen ringer recover from a really bad peg,now thats something else !

TF_slopesSteve, did I hear somewhere that you will be doing a write up on how you won the festival, tactics / baits? which magazine / paper. I heard alot of talk of shredded meat whilst down there, was this part of your plan?

TF_grazAlan Scotthorne had a fairly dismal week in the Preston festival finishing with 22 points as far as I can remember. He drew next to TrueBlue from on here for 3 days and Steve beat him 2-1.

TF_carpmagicParticipantHi John to be fair the fish werent just in fron of Des. Obvioulsly being an end peg helped but his was by no means the only winning peg. Take mine for example, i wasnt over the moon drawing peg 5 but there were a lot of fish there. Basically i just didnt get it right on the day. After having two brilliant weeks with meat i again went with meat in the final and to cut a long story short they didnt seem to want it and wouldnt settle over it as a result. Had i fished 6mm pellet shallow then i am 100% sure i could have pushed Des. Alas its only a four hour match and you have to be positive and i was certainly that. Im sure there are a few other anglers who also went away thinking on another day they could have won it. Peggin wise it made a change for the tackle shop end to feature as it has been dire in the last two years. In fact going on recent parkdean masters form where the fish were would have been the last place you wanted to be. Although having said that Clint did say the fish were at the shop end before the draw although i didnt believe him!
Slopes next weeks Angling times will have a write up on my day five on pollawyn and in the next couple of weeks i will also be covering how i fished gwinear. Shredded meat wasnt something i used, most of my fishing was done with quarter inch cubes as per normal. The fish definitely switched onto meat as the two weeks went on. Me, Phil and Cooky all fished meat throughout the week where appropiate.
Its true Alan struggled although knowing Alan as i do he wont leave it like that for long. -

TomWHi steve, first fo all well done on another cracking WA festival win!
when you say your fihsing quarter inch cubes is that both on the hook and as feed?
Is there any situations during the week where you were feeding or fishing and larger bits?
Also i know your a big fan of using hemp were you using this in conjunction with the meat or not?
-
16/10/2007 at 8:33 pm #66092
TF_carpmagicParticipantTomW yes i was using quarter inch cubes as both feed and on hook.
I tended to feed Hemp only when the swim died as opposed to on a regular basis. This normally meant at the start and with around an houyr and half to go.
