Well it’s a joke to be honest – I’ve not seen anywhere a breakdown of how the Drennan money is split, so presumably it’s split across the various teams. I would imagine it pays for the entry fee, CIPS fees, bait, accomodation, banquet tickets, food etc. However, the England team always travel out there a week before practice, so probably they have to pay that out of their own pocket. However, probably 80% of the teams there have to pay their own way because they don’t have any cash sponsorship. I’ve said it before, the event is a money making excercise for CIPS and is ridiculously expensive.

Is this because there is no funding being made available for the teams?
When I went on Internationals a few years back I had to pay, most of the teams that compete in internationals have to pay the entire price themselves, it is only the big nations that have funding of some sorts. Trust me having funding means a lot to teams, it is very expensive to sort out the logistics of getting anglers and their tackle to a match anywhere in Europe. Gareth will tell you how much it cost, it aint cheap!!

Here is an example, I had to bring bait out on the Friday before a World Champs, it was Portugal in 2002, the local price for bloodworm was crazy money as it was all imported.
I scraped 5 pints with two mates on the Thursday, flew out on the Friday morning, ran the bank on the two days and flew back with the lads on the Monday, I paid for everything for myself to do that so the lads on the team could have fresh bait.

dont understand why it isnt televised? surely the revenue from the tv company would help each team? i know i would watch it if it was on sky etc

Seen this get a mention on another forum. If angling hasn’t got a few sponsors queuing up now after all the years it’s been popular, especially given the individual world champs we’ve had, I don’t think it ever will have. If that’s the case maybe we have to face the reality that it needs to be self funding ?
On the other forum I mentioned someone has arranged a charity match whereby you pay £200 to be paired up with a top angler to fish a pairs match.
If something similar was done 2, 3, 4 or more times per year, even at £100 to ‘partner a star’ (of the UK match angling circuit) I’m sure a substantial sum would be generated to boost the Drennan contribution.
