        Hi all,

I was unfortunate to snap my N5 Preston orginal one xs pole section on a fish the other day. which after a struggle and the section along with a N4 and top kit having sunk myself and a friend managed to retrieve it.

So I will be able to have that section repaired, in the meantime I went on the hunt for a new N5 Preston apparently have 3 on order but have no idea when they likely to arrive, being that Italy shuts down for a month.

I asked if they had any other N5 which will fit and not alter the pole too much.I Had a phone call this morning, they had two which would do the job but the more expensive one (even though it’s still cheaper than the one xs section) was a better fit.

The section was from a GIS Absolute XS which is a current pole. The question i have is, this pole is rated a 16 in power kits and the one xs is rated 20. So am i right that the rating is all about the power kits and not the overall pole. Just wondering if a N4 One xs then the new N5 followed by the N6 will make the N5 the weak point.

Any feedback or from personal experience will be greatly appreciated. Of cause the only downside is if it’s going to weaken the pole, I have gone ahead and ordered the section and I don’t want to mess the shop about. So hopefully my thoughts are nothing to worry about.

        Cheers all..

There is no doubt that this will work, but I think you have answered your own question in that a section from another pole will either be a weak point or cause another section additional stress.
Not sure why you didn’t just get the broken section repaired which you could then use until the correct section is available to buy. Most repairers can do the job within 48 hours and this would have saved you a lot of cash

            Hi,

Thanks for your reply, I guess it’s all about me being impatience 🙂 I am getting the section repaired and a bloody good job he does I might add.

Today I had some spare time, so I phoned around some manufactures and had my mind put at ease.

The ratings are to do with the kits used and not the pole plus the grade of carbon used is of very good quality I’ve been informed.

So now I will have a repaired section and a new 5 which cost less than the orginal, after phoning around today, your be amazed how many pole sections are very similar and a lot of what your told and believe is more of a gimmick.

So again I thank you for your viewing, but for now my mind is at ease 🙂

On the other hand, I have always felt that repaired sections – especially if they are done properly from someone like Esselle -can be much stronger than the original section….they certainly flex less in the hand.

If the boys at Prestons gave given it the ok, I can’t see it doing too much damage at all. It might change the characteristics of the pole a little, but unless you are a Gannon-like animal, I really think you will be fine mate.

I used to use a number 5 section from a really old Maver when in the margins. Being cheaper it actually bent a little more and I felt that took some pressure off the top 4.

                  Cheers Robbo,

Thanks Stonecold!! I tried the pole spares place, and they didn’t have any in stock and they contacted Preston and were told the same thing.

I’m all sorted now, section being repaired and picking the new one up next week.

Thank you for all your input.
