Thinking of having some top kits converted to pulla kits. Is it best to use universal top 2’s or will the original top 2’s be ok?

I have converted all my original top 2’s to side pullers, Universal tops tend to throw the balance of your pole especially when fishing long. Firstly you must have a wrap put on approx 12″ above the female end of the No.3 prior to drilling and fitting a bush. A wrap generally costs £10 & a couple of quid for a bush. Side pullers are IMO far superior to pull bungs for several reasons.
          1)Much lighter.
2)In deep water a short 4 or long 4 can be left in place to land the fish while tensioning the elastic.
          3)More control.

Thanks bm, I did think about pulla bungs but I can see the advantages of a side pulla. A friend of mine repairs poles and has started to make side pullas he puts an internal and external wrap on but sometimes he gets breakages when drilling. Any body got any tips on drilling?

I have drilled the side of my no 3s for blue hyro, and had no problem. (no wrap)
I only use up to 0.12 on blue hydro, so the line will break before it breaks the section.
My Black hydro tops are wraped, as i may fish up to 0.20 on black.

The normal preston pulla bungs work fine, you are at a disadvantage when fishing real deep venues as someone said on here, not being able to get at them with your 4’s or 5’s on, but if you wan’t to try using them first without drilling the bungs are the answer.

Nigel, what size and type of drill did you use and how do you decide what size bush to use? Do you stick to one size of bush no matter the size of elastic i.e. large bush?

                      TF_Nigel.

I just used the same bush as i use in the no 2 of my pole, a no5 maver.

It was around 5mm if i remember, just drill a 5mm hole in the side.
High speed but do it slowly, slow speed and the drill will pick up the carbon, have a practise on an old section if you have one.

I then cut the bush in half, mixed some araldite and glued it in.

And dont use more than a 0.12 hooklenth, or the section will break, and you will blame me, lol.

You can always get it fixed and wraped at the same time though if it did break,

as long as the fish hasent swam off with it! lol

Milo stipper kits are well balanced and fit Daiwa poles. These have a slot in the base of the no.3 section and are approx.£60.

Cover the wrap with a piece of masking tape to stop the drill bit skating, Use a dremmel on high speed with 2mm drill bit, put a piece of dowel in the section if you are heavy handed, once the hole is through use a small conical shaped rotary stone and gradually make the hole bigger checking regularly till you get a tight fit for the bush.
Internal wrap? never seen one of those all mine are external.
