Ringstead Grange,
From the ridiculous to the sublime. Horrendous weather at the start of the week brought a slow week as far as fishing numbers go but those who persevered caught fish. Its the same story fish are on daphnia over the deeps hard up against the Nene bank in the morning, moving further out as the day warms (if at all). Patterns are varied , anything with a wiggle, any combination of colours. Blobs, green/yellow in combination with buzzers static, on the drop, lures slow retrieve, basically if you stick it on the nose they’ll have it, Because the fish are feeding hard right from stocking they are in superb condition.
Friday was the story of flood, stricken boats, fog, frustrated fishermen, bailiff having a breakdown. My apologies to those who came to take a boat out and couldn’t, believe me it was a tough decision to take as water levels rose fast and we were in danger of closing the fishery altogether. The high level of the flood came to the edge of the paving slabs another inch and the lodge would be flooded. Mercifully the waters stopped and very slowly subsided and the fish stayed in the lake. However, those who fished, found that the fish refused any fly so no angler that day even had a take. I assumed that the fish were put off by the water pouring in from the Nene and colouring the previously gin clear water.
Saturday started with the relief that the levels had started to drop, even though we had fog in the morning for a couple of hours. We managed to get the boats out and fish were caught straight away. I would like to thank the anglers that turned up supporting the fishery and giving it a go. I don’t think any were disappointed and fish responded in the coloured water, again the same areas. Phil and Gene regular father and son duo hit the sweet spot with 64? trout caught and released between them fishing from a boat on the bung.
A few other fisherman who caught:
Mike Bassett caught a 4.5 pounder
John Humber from Loughbrough caught 3 @ 3lbs
Lee Skevington caught 6 from the bank
Nick Board caught 3 @ 3lbs
Kevin Burton from Burton Latimer caught 3 @ 2.5 lbs on an evening ticket.
On Sunday we hosted Iain Barr’s Airflow Bank Masters match that was switched last minute from our sister water Elinor who unfortunately suffered worse than us in the floods.. Of the 12 who fished most caught (all catch and release) the winner Scott Bowman had 9, 2nd and 3rd had 8 and 7 respectively. Overall I believe the fishery performed well stepping into the breach as it were and hopefully those who competed will come again. Thank you as well to our pleasure fishes who came in good numbers on Sunday and persevered on the more difficult banks with good grace putting up with the match being held on the West and North banks.
Looking forward, Rosemary and I will be reviewing the brown trout stocking policy. More to follow on that subject.
Still open, still fishing with quality trout, Ringstead Grange
tight lines Brendan
