Well..what can i say..the venue itself looks like it has never, ever, been fished and from the results i can see why…i weighed it 3lb 5oz which consisted of road and chubb caught on the stick and waggler, with squatts and double white maggots. Just as i thought i had done enough for the win i learnt that someone weighed in one fish which was caught with his last cast weighing in 3lb 9oz and my dad, a rival, weighed in 3lb 8oz with 2 x eels caught on worm….A very hard days fishing, especially as i was beaten by a total of three fish,,,typical roll on the next one…..

i can also see why so many anglers never fish rivers, this was,is,a very hard venue, though i was please with my weight/catch. However learning that other anglers can park by their peg and have a net full of fish does make you wonder…..

Saint, To be fair I knew that stretch 30 years ago when the Avon was at it’s peak and at this time of year it was hard then. I don’t know who of your lot drew the Weirpool but in those days it was great (it was also poaching!), the rest was deep and hard (no porn film puns please).

Fish it in a cold snap and you won’t recognise it, that whole stretch can be fantastic. On the ‘Free’ (Wyre Piddle) side, there was/is a slack in the reeds the size of a snooker table. You could take 25lb of Roach off the end of the rod without even trying. Fish the same peg in summer/autumn you’d be lucky to get a bite.

The part we fished was not the weir part but two meadows which did not even have pegs cut into the bank. the water was 18-20 feet deep and was very slow moving as you would expect with the depth. just to top tings off there was caravans and boats parts wrapped around trees….theres no doubt this is not a great venue but i did enjoy myself with my catch, as for the others, i don’t think they will return there again?

A lot of those deeper bits were the same, crap in Summer/Early autumn, full of fish once the cold snaps hit. Cropthorne and above Pershore wear spring to mind.

I was up that way recently and walked the stretch below Pershore wear where I learnt my fishing as a kid (I lived on it!).

There was a match on and the guys on the fast water all seemed to be hooking Barbel. The bloke in the wear was getting a skimmer a chuck. I can’t believe the Roach aren’t still there on some of the pegs though.

I don’t know who the club were although I did have a chat with a couple of them. Some of the guys in the slower water pegs looked as though they could have done with a bit of coaching in fising the stick though.
