The River Severn barbel record has been obliterated with a fish of 16lb 11oz.
The capture beats the previous best of 16lb 5oz, taken by Andrew Allard in March 2009.
It fell to the rod of respected angler Kev Gittins who tackled a tough stretch believed to be somewhere on the lower stretches of Britain’s longest river.
The catch was shared on the Barbel Fishing World open forums and anglers were quick to congratulate the specimen hunter.
The Severn wrote itself into angling history when it produced a 16lb 3oz British best for Howard Maddocks in 1997. That fish, which stood as a national record for under a year, fell to a meatball.
