having a long weekend next week on this stretch of the severn, staying in the woodbridge inn, i will be feeder fishing for barbel, taking the obvious halibut pellets and meat, but has anyone fished this stretch, should i go groundbait and pellet feeder or straight lead, any info would be very welcome, thanks in advance.

I am lucky enough to live just up the road , when we fish the river always attack it now with pellet feeder and big hair rigged pellets a,ways good for a few barbel

Thanks paddy & petejones, what size halibut would you take for the hook, thinking of going 0.22 hooklength would that do it? Is there anywhere from outside the woodbridge i should target, or are the fish all stretched out? Will be going down this friday, cant wait, ps is it worth taking meat?

Pellet all the way. River low. Catch most of your fish last hour of the day.

Some interesting view points there. But personally I do not agree with the big pellet on the hair.
We have had far better success on smaller pellets on the lassoo, even down as far as 4mm.
I only lasso them now, instead of the hair rig and always take a good selection of Kamasan black cap feeders, plus scissors and electrical tape to either reduce or increase the feed rates from the feeders.
The stretch is very, very low at the moment and on Friday when you go, this will dictate where you go, so not really the best pegs in some situations.
There are literally thousands of fry, bleak etc so any moving bait such as maggots will get mullered at the moment.
Find the Brewery Inn with the car park opposite and get a day ticket from there (I think), Pete Jones may know more on that score and if you early enough head for the oak tree pegs to the left of the pub as you look at it from the car park. (you will go down a track where there are some houses and cottages, the river is bang in front of you). You will know when you are there as they are well fished and look for the massive oak tree. There are some snags, rocks etc, but you will find the Barble in front, middle and far side, just have a chuck around till you fing them. I think that stretch and the opposite side which is run by the Rowley and District (I think) some of the best barble fishing around, however the Rowley do not do day tickets. I think what some one has said about the evening period is about right in these conditions.
                    Have Fun!
