Hello boys and girls. I’ve had a play at river fishing (fished the lark at barton mills last sunday) and re-acquainted myself with the fun that is stick fishing. I’ve been thinking of trying the Yare at bawburgh and John Wilson and the freefishing site tell me its free. So that’s where I’m off to this weekend. I was after some info about tactics though. Is it deep and wide or shallow and narrow? There are some pics on ‘tinternet showing the mill (which looks big and ideal leger territory) but I’m not too certain if that’s in the free spots you can fish. If it is,is it float or bomb?
Any help would be helpful. John

Well,in the best tradition of adventurous fishing I’m going anyway! Armed with Wilson’s book I’ll be at the Yare about 7a.m. If I’m in the private bit I’m sure someone will tell me.
The kit’s in the car and I’m travelling light – rod, reel bait, bag and net. Chub time!

The Yare was a bit of no go to be honest. I expected a wide, deep river with lots of glides and fishy areas to hunt those chub down. It was more like a flooded stream full of grass. No shopping trolleys though. I gave it 4 hours of light legering and free lined bread and spam but not a sniff. Mind you, at least some local did come along as I was packing up and explained that the river used to be better and there’s an otter/cormorant munching everything. And lots of signs saying ‘private’ no access to the river….
So,today I took myself down to Walnut Farm fisheries where the owner Trev let me fish the canal by myself for free. And it was a glorious day. Well, there was slow start as I waited for the ice to go but I had 15 small roach, 2 near pound roach, 2lb+ and a 1lb+ crucian. Final fish was on the last cast and it was a beaut – a common or hybrid (more like a common methinks) of about 5lb. Good fun on the 3lb line and 2lb hooklink. Especially as when I got her in the net the hook and line parted company!
I could get get into this fishing lark :p

That bit of the Yare, I think NACA stocked a load of tiny barbel a few years ago, but they haven’t been seen since.

There’s a few perch n bits n bobs in the mill pool in the village, but tbh it’s not worth fishing.

Have a look on google earth at whittlingham country park mate. It’s just outside Norwich, easy parking, and there’s some nice spots to have a go at.

Is that fishing the river or the lake/broad in the park? I read the NACA article but it was a year or two old.

                  The river.

I’ve had lots of bream out of there while trying to catch a carp, and there’s all the other usual species.

I’m sure there must be fish in the broads, but I’ve never heard of anyone fishing them

Cheers. I did read about a ‘picnic bend’ on the river. Is that a spot worth a jaunt? And is parking free or is there a yellow hatted vulture lurking about? I might do a recce on the bike one weekend when the close season starts. thanks again

Last time I was there, there was a few places to,park without paying.

I concentrated on the confluence of the Yare and Wensum. Trying to catch carp, the bream were a pain. They were there in plague proportions.

It’s quite weedy. I was fishing a 20-25mm boily, and putting it in a pva bag of pellets to get it to the bottom.

They were having it straight away…
