Fish week 4,066(season 28,854) Returns 570 (6,539) Rod average 7.13(4.41)
Rutland Water has fished well again this week with numerous limits being taken in most areas. All methods seem to be working from dry flies down to tube flies fished deep. Boat anglers have taken the majority of the fish with a gradual increase in the number of fish being taken by bank anglers along the shoreline. The majority of boats are taking fish out in the deeper water from East Creek all the way through to the Dam. With the aerators continuing to produce fish these open water fish are mainly stock fish averaging around 2lb. Anglers trying the many weed beds are find bigger fish with larger Rainbows and Browns being taken on dry fly and fry patterns.
Tony Bevan returned to Rutland from Wales with his boat partner and fished the South Arm weed beds using size 16 dries and light leaders – the pair got to grips with quality Rainbows up to 4lb on both days of their trip.
Rutland Warden, Nigel Savage, had an afternoon boat session last Friday fishing fry patterns and managed 10 fish including Rainbows up to 4lb and two Browns, the best one weighing 5lb 4oz. Nigel fished a minkie on a floating line, only two of his fish were under 3lb.
Anglers braving the North Arm were rewarded. Andrew Flitcroft took ten fish on dries last Saturday, and Peter De-Kremer, fishing in the RWFF vs GWFFA loch style match, had eight fish weighing 24lb ½oz using dries. His fish were approximately 1lb on average bigger than those who had eight fish in the main basin.
Bank anglers have caught on the Peninsula, Normanton and around New Zealand Point and Yellowstone. Flies used were a mixture of dries, daddy long-legs, hoppers and nymphs.
Prospects look very good with anglers catching well on their preferred methods, with lures, nymphs, fry patterns, the rudder and dry fly. Fish are being taken on many areas of the reservoir.

Anglers have enjoyed good sport at Grafham Water with a rise in the rod average for both boat and bank anglers. 20% of the trout caught have weighed over 3lb.Bank anglers have had the most success fishing the South end of the Dam and Deep Water Point either early morning or evening are best on floating lines with shrimp patterns, GRHE, diawl bachs fished along the margins of the dam wall. Some trout have also been caught along the G bank by fishing the same method.
Boat anglers have also found that the fishing has improved over the past week with the South Dam and North Shore (100 yards out) giving the most consistent sport on a mixture of lines from intermediate to Di 7’s. The most prolific flies for the boat anglers have been blobs, cat or viva boobies, cormorants and diawl bachs. There has also been some good fishing at P and B buoys by using the same methods as at the Dam. The Seat has also been producing some good catches from C Buoy to E Buoy off the Seat.

Lure fishing for predators, boat only, to 31 January (subject to boat availability)Ravensthorpe Reservoir
Fish week 202 (season 11,620) Returns 30 (1,830) Rod average 6.7(6.3)
The fish are up and so is the rod average at Ravensthorpe – at 6.7 fish per rod.The top methods have been to fish loch style from a drifting boat with pulled traditional wets or fishing dry flies with fish coming to silver Invicta and various dabbler patterns fished just sub surface. Claret hoppers have also worked well fished wet.
Fish have been particularly active in the late afternoon and evening which is often the cue to mount a team of dries. Try various midge patterns such as klinkhammer, Bobs Bits or Shipmans. Small daddies have also been taking their fair share of the fish. These methods have produced some red letter days for several anglers this week with boats landing 30 plus fish. The fish are now fighting fit and top quality. The Browns are also putting in an appearance with several fish over 4lb being caught and released.
In bright, blustery conditions anglers fishing blobs and nymphs have had some success. Bank fishing is still difficult with fish usually out of casting range from the dam until the evening.
Best Rainbow 4lb plus.
Best boat areas Middle of reservoir, Main Bowl.
Best bank areas The Dam
