        Fish week 3,305 (season 40,472) Returns 777 (9,191) Rod average 4.25 (4.4)
Anglers are enjoying some outstanding sport at Rutland Water with the highlight of the week being the final of the Anglian Water Airflo International which fished to a rod average of 5.35 for the two days.

Prospects look good with boat anglers still having the upper hand and reports of really big fish starting to move. However, it’s surely only a matter of time before numbers of fish start showing around the shoreline for the bank anglers.

Although plenty of fish are being caught, they are not feeding very hard, some are showing with corixa, and shrimp, with one 5lb plus Rainbow showing that a young Zander is also worth eating! This is despite the fact that there are huge concentrations of fry, shrimp, daphnia, corixa and snails available.

        Anglian Water Airflo International
Anglers from all over the UK and Europe headed to Rutland Water for the two day final of this prestigious match. At the end of Day One (Tuesday 1 October) the Seighford Sharks with 45 fish for 129lb 6 3/8oz looked to have a comfortable margin of nearly 20lb ahead of second placed Blagdon Fly Fishers Cortland with 42 fish for 110lb 6¼oz. However, history shows that very few teams have led from the front to take victory on the final day. Only a few pounds separated 3rd placed Hanningfield on 108lb 15¼oz, 4th Welsh Hawks 106lb 11½oz and 5th Menteith Ospreys on 104lb 15 3/8oz.

Rutland Water was at its best and fished to a rod average of 5.45.
Day One highlights – the best Rainbow weighed 5lb 11oz and was taken by Graeme Steele fishing for the Grizzle Cats. The top rod was Tim Joyce, fishing for Hanningfield. Tim’s bag weight was 26lb 13 3/8oz – he also took the best Brown of the day at 5lb 15 7/8oz.

As the boats ventured from the harbour they made an interesting split – the majority headed for the South Arm with only six daring to venture down the North Arm. Interestingly none stayed in the Main Basin – the first time anyone can recall this happening in a major match. Anglers had tubed here on practice day without success. Fish were up in the water and some of the most successful tactics were to fish two boobies twelve feet apart on slime lines. Despite the numbers fishing the South Arm, boats were well spaced and favoured the left hand side of Manton Bay.

First back to the pontoon on Day One were Mike Dixon fishing for Seighford Sharks with 8 fish for 24lb 13¾ and Iain Barr fishing for Blagdon Fly Fishers Cortland 8 fish for 24lb 3 5/8oz. This pair arrived back at 1.30pm.

At the end of Day One The Corrib Hoppers were in 8th place with 37 fish for 91lb 8 5/8oz, and were the leading overseas team.

On the second, and final day, the boats left the pontoon and yet again six made for the North Arm and the rest headed to the South Arm. Anglers were caught in heavy early morning rain and the atmosphere was tense with anticipation.

Fortunately conditions soon improved and were near perfect with no further rain, it remained overcast and the forecast strong winds didn’t materialise.
Rutland Water again fished its socks off with a Day Two rod average of 5.25, only slightly less than Day One (5.45). Across the two days there were numerous limits including quality 3lb plus Rainbows and Browns. At the final weigh in it was evident that some good sized fish were tipping the scales. Tactics used ranged from boobies ‘popped’ on the surface, to blobs, nymphs, cormorants and dabblers fished on intermediate/slow sink lines, with one or two successful using floating lines, with nymphs and dries.

At the presentation dinner, following two days of intense competition, Jon Marshall, Fisheries Manager for Anglian Water, held his audience in suspense as he announced the results from Day Two. It would take a lot to dislodge Seighford Sharks from the top – but anything was possible.

So on Day Two Wullie Simpson fishing for Menteith Ospreys landed the best Brown at 5lb 10 1/8oz. With a one Brown limit enforced Wullie had to return an even bigger Brown estimated at around 9lb later on. Nick Long fishing for Blagdon Fly Fishers Cortland (second placed team after Day One) netted the best Rainbow at 6lb 7¼oz – Nick’s fish was the best fish of the match overall. Mark Harrison of Seighford Sharks had the best bag on Day Two with 8 fish for 26lb 95/8oz. Top rod of the entire match was Mike Dixon of Seighford Sharks with 16 fish for 48lb 13 ¾oz.

Team Airflo had an excellent day coming out top on Day Two with 44 fish for 109lb 11 3/8oz with Seighford Sharks in second with 38 fish for 105lb 9 1/8oz and Blagdon Fly Fishers Cortland third with 35 fish for 99lb 12 1/8oz.

There were outstanding consistent performances across both days from a number of the top teams with Seighford Sharks maintaining their lead from Day One for a convincing victory. Team members Craig Barr, Gary Owen, Mark Harrison, Phil Longstaff and Phil and Mike Dixon received gold medals along with the prestigious silver salver first awarded 31 years ago. It was a remarkable double for the Seighford Sharks as they had previously won the Lexus European team event back in August. Silver medals went to Blagdon Fly Fishers Cortland and Bronze to Team Airflo. The top three teams also received prizes and substantial prize money. The overall rod average for the match was 5.35.

G Loomis Team Belgium won the prize for leading overseas team. The WaterAid trophy for the heaviest fish taken throughout the match series went to Bob Cooper. Bob (who fishes for Stocks Falcons) took a fine 9lb 9oz Rainbow during the Northern Heat fished at Stocks Reservoir on 8 June.

        Grafham Water
        Fish week 639 (season 20,115) Returns 202 (5,117) Rod average 3.16 (3.93)
Grafham Water continues to fish well with a healthy rod average of 3.16 with a third of the trout taken weighing 3lb or over. Bank anglers have had the best of the sport with the entire Dam producing the most consistent catch rates. The Seat, G Buoy, Pylon Point and Hill Farm have also produced excellent fishing throughout the week mainly on shrimp patterns, GRHE, diawl bachs and minkies, all fished on a floating line.

The heaviest bag of the week was caught by bank angler Martin Webster who caught 8 fish for an incredible weight of 30lb 4oz, by fishing red holographic diawl bachs on a floating line. Martin caught two trout at the Seat and then moved to G Buoy where he caught his remaining six fish. Martin’s best trout was a Rainbow of 5lb 5oz which was also the heaviest rainbow caught for the week.

The boat anglers haven’t had the most consistent sport this week but on some days they have enjoyed some good fishing. Gaynes Cove, G Buoy, the Seat, lodge frontage and Valley Creek have all produced some great sport. The main methods for boat anglers have been intermediate lines with a mixture of minkies, humungus booby, cats whisker, diawl bachs, crunchers, GRHE and buzzers generally fished slow.

        GWFFA bank match 29 September.

11 anglers fished the latest GWFFA bank match and caught 52 trout for a very healthy rod average of 4.72. Most competitors fished the Dam where there were five limits recorded.

Top rod of the day was John Vincent with 8 fish for 22lb 8 5/8oz. John fished shrimp patterns and minkies at the South end of the Dam where he took six fish on shrimp patterns and two on minkies.

The biggest fish of the day was caught by Chris McLeod. Chris caught a superb over wintered Rainbow of 4lb 6¼oz from Pylon Point on a shrimp pattern.

        Pitsford Water
        Fish week 225 (season 11,990) Returns 76 (3,545) Rod average 2.9 (3.3)
Several good quality Browns have been caught in the last week at Pitsford as the fry feeding has begun in earnest. The best Brown of the week was taken by Simon Ashton and went to 6lb 2oz – it was a personal best Pitsford fish for Simon who was boat fishing. Other good sized Browns included one at 4lb 8oz for David Hestildine and a 4lb plus for P Garnett.

Boat angler Angus McFaddean had a great day taking 20 plus fish using fry patterns on a floating line drifting along the Narrows.

Bank anglers are reporting more gaps appearing in the weed and some cracking fry feeding trout coming to fry patterns fished in the margins. With the cooling weather things should continue to improve.

Fish were in the top two feet of the water early in the week but the easterly winds have sent them deeper and made the fishing harder over the weekend. The rod average remained around 3.
        Competition news

        Ravensthorpe Reservoir
        Fish week 156 (season 8,501) Returns 54 (1,774) Rod average 2.9 (4.8)
Fishing at Ravensthorpe this week has been a bit of a ‘mixed bag’. The week started well with anglers catching well on wets, dries and blobs fished on floating lines. But towards the weekend it was a lot harder with more anglers ‘drifting’ their boats to find the fish. The most productive area has been the Main Bowl.

Mr Whibley had 7 fish on Klinkhammers while Mr Mills had 8 fish on Daddies, and traditional wet flies fished on a floating line.

Mr Lea had 8 fish on a grey minkie fishing an intermediate line, while Mr Duffy had 10 fish on hoppers.

Mr Makin and his partner had 25 fish to the boat on daddies, crippled midges and another 25 fish were boated by Mr Welch and Mr Dunn who used green/white minkies on a floating line. Mr Welch had the biggest fish of the week a 7lb Rainbow.

Not many bank anglers have fished this week, but those that did enjoyed sport on the Dam. Bob Draper landed 5 fish and lost a few more fishing buzzers on a floating line.

Best Rainbow 7lb taken by P Welch of Boston.

        Best methods See report.

        Best boat areas Main bowl.

        Best bank areas Dam (limited).

Mid week boat winner M Benson of Didcot, Oxon.
