Sea fishing on the Beara….
Paul Harris reports
MAY was a strange month with much of the hot, sunny, still weather giving way to showery, cooler and (very) windy weather at times, but still we got out to do a bit of fishing.
As is often the case in May there was not so many anglers about as the majority wait till June but they often miss out on some excellent early season fishing. I had great plans to get out but got caught by herself to do a bit of work on the house as we were due an inspection for our Star grading. Jobs done, and 4 Star status achieved, I was let off the lease and found plenty of sport to keep me busy. Ray fishing was good with both thornies and spotted but although I got within 4 ounces I could not get a specimen.
Had the same problem with the mullet, lots of fish to 4.5lb but a 5 pounder remained elusive.
I was soon put in my place by Roger Baker who had our first specimen mullet of the year with a fish of 5lbs 5ozs. Joined up with him for an afternoons fishing and in 4 hours we had a dozen mullet to nearly 4 pounds on bread and 40 plus pollack on rubber worms. We both noticed how thin the mullet are this year but I am sure they will soon fatten up with all the rich feed about.
The brother Lane from Cork, Noel and Christy, dropped in for a couple of days fishing and they found thornback ray, doggies, huss and even a tub gurnard of about 1.5lbs.
June is a much busier month fishing wise so reports should be coming out weekly from now to the end of the season.
