Brown trout have been showing well with the biggest Brown of the season to date being caught last Saturday. This splendid 8lb 12oz specimen was taken by Stanley McCart from Northern Ireland. Stanley, who fishes for the Emerald Islanders, was practicing for the Anglian Water Airflo International final 30 September/1 October. The fish was caught with a size 10 cruncher on a floating line.

The biggest Rainbow of the week was caught by Michael Wiggins of Oakham. This was one of three fish that were tagged for the recent WaterAid Flyfishing Challenge held at Rutland on 12th September. The 5lb 6oz Rainbow fell to a Diawl Bach fished on a floating line. A number of Rainbows and Browns in the 3-5lb range are showing, especially close in. Fish out in the open water are averaging around the 2lb mark.

Anglers have again found fish in many areas of Rutland with boats catching from the bottom of the South Arm all the way through to the main basin and the North. Bank anglers have been out in numbers with fish showing from around New Zealand Point, Normanton and Sykes Lane. Whilst on the Peninsula fish came from Old Hall, Yellowstones, Spud Bay through to Carrot Creek and the Finches down to the Transformer. There are still a good number of fish out in the middle of the reservoir, feeding on small buzzers while the bigger fish are close into the shoreline feeding on a variety of food with anything from sticklebacks, fry, corixa and snails.

Fish tend to be high up in the water with a good number of anglers having success on floating lines, with nymphs, dries and fry patterns. Two boats last Wednesday caught fish deeper with lures down the North Arm with good Rainbows and Browns, many in the 3-5lb bracket.

Find out which team triumphs – full story in next week’s Fishery News.

At the end of last week anglers started to make their way from all parts of the British Isles and from further afield, including Northern Ireland, France, Belgium, the Orkneys, and Shetland Islands. 23 teams will compete for the coveted silver salver. Some teams have had up to three days of practice – the crucial match days are Tuesday 31 September and Wednesday 1 October. Settled weather conditions are forecast coupled with light winds. Will it be won around the shoreline of Rutland Water with anglers going for the big fish that are known to be lurking there or out in the open water areas of the reservoir? Big fish are showing in steadily increasing numbers with both Browns and Rainbows of good size being reported. All the details and results will be in next week’s report.

Make the most of the Autumn conditions and enter the popular Anglian Water Autumn Pairs match that will be fished on Saturday 11 October. This is a reservoir rules event split up with you either fishing in the rudder section or non rudder (your choice). Being a no fly size restriction you can fish anything from tiny dries all the way through to a large tube fly. Call in or phone the lodge on 01780 686441 to book.

        Boat demand
Boat bookings are in high demand with many competitions and events this month, and into early October as well, please phone the lodge before making your journey.

        Pitsford Water
        Fish week 279 (season 10,663) Returns 67(2,690) Rod average 4.1 (3.9)
Anglers have enjoyed some good fishing this week using dry fly tactics on floating lines and traditional wets on floating or midge tip lines. Some anglers have also been starting to catch on fry imitations in and around the weedbeds.

Bank fishing is now becoming more accessible after the recent strong winds have broken up the weed a little, especially along the North shore – perfect for catching those early morning fry and snail feeders.

        Ravensthorpe Reservoir
Fish week 76 (season 12,192) Returns 22(1,970) Rod average 3.4(6.1)
The fishing at Ravensthorpe has been challenging this week, Daddies, Hoppers or Klinkhammer on a floating line have accounted for most of the fish. Afternoons seem to be the best time, the last couple of hours of daylight are best. One or two good fish have been spotted fry feeding, so maybe it’s time to switch to the lures. Some really nice fish were stocked this week, given a few days to settle in they will come onto the feed.
