Shockleader Knot

How many lads on here use the allbright knot for attaching braid to shockleader?
If anyones does…have you had any problems and do you trim the tags right back?

I used it in Feb to attach a fluoro shock leader to a braid mainline and the knot kept getting jammed in the rings, so I eventually took it of and used the braid alone. in my opinion this is a knot that would work better if tying a braid leader to a mono/fluoro mainline because of the orientation of the leader tag ends on the finished knot (they point away from the reel). I don’t think I got the knot wrong, as it looked like the images I was trying to follow.

I use it all the time for Megga chucks at loch ken. It’s very small and neat and also very strong. It goes through the rings smoothly

Pauls knot is the best I’ve seen, he told me about it so I tried it and its spot on. I used a simple loop in the braid with a half blood knot for years with no problems, I then moved to an albright and smashed tips with it. IMO it’s not a very good knot for shockleaders for the following reason – when you tie the knot the mono naturally lies back on itself, cutting this back flush leaves a ‘blunt’ end which is the thickness of the line. You have to cut it flush really otherwise you have a tag of line facing the wrong way for casting, So, if your shockleader is say 8lb Maxima which is something like 0.25mm thick, then you have a ‘blunt’ end facing the direction of the cast which is 0.25mm thick. This catches on the eyes when you cast and the line is moving at such a speed that it coils up behind it, which causes issues.

Thats my theory anyway which may be total rubbish! Pauls knot I reckon is the best otherwise the key is to leave a tag of some description but facing back towards the reel – which is what you get when using the loop in the braid with a half blood knot on the mono.

I’ve never used a shockleader yet for precisely the reasons you lads have already mentioned…often thought it through but bottled it every time and just fished braid straight to a hooklength. To be honest i’ve never lost many fish once they’re on…playing them with the ‘limp wrist’ technique lol but summats nagging at me to do this properly. I don’t wanna be ragging Daiwa tips to bits every session 🙁

Nicki,use a double grinner just don’t forget to dampen it down and you don’t have to cut the tags right back,never had a problem.

Ditched long shocks a while back,just use a metre of 0.25 Gorilla loop to loop ,0.10 braid with silicone over join as a visual for dropper and when fish are at net.Never cracked off or lost fish ,not a problem at range with 50 -60 gramme rockets.

Double grinner would still mean the leader tag would be facing direction of travel surely?
