        Match Report

Soldiers and Sailors match on the Old Canal at the Rycroft
The latest soldiers and Sailors fishing match was held on the popular Rycroft fishery using the Old Canal. The weather had continued to remain mild and dry with a moderate wind, making if difficult to fish the far bank with a pole at 14.5 metres.
Paul Richardson continues his good form with a win from peg 1, an end peg near the car park. Although Paul did try the long pole on the far side for very little, the bulk of his fish came on a small method feeder cast towards the far corner of his peg. The margin only produced two carp and Paul didn’t spend much time in the margin as he was continually getting pestered by small fish. The 45-0-0 of mostly carp that Paul put on the scales was good enough for a outright win on the day.
Neil Stevenson took second place with a close 43-14-0 from peg 11. The wind was quite bad down this end of the fishery, but that didn’t deter Neil from persevering with the long pole. In conjunction with spells on the bomb and pellet, and pole and pellet these were the successful methods that secured the second place.
Bill Peach drawn on peg 18, the other end peg fished pole and pellet to far bank, and also to the far corner for third place with 33-8-0 of mostly carp. Very close behind was Rob Pembridge (visitor) with 32-10-0 from peg 12, fishing long pole and pellet in the very difficult wind. Brian Leafe took fifth place with 27-8-0 from peg 10, using chopped worm and caster two thirds of the way across, on the pole. The sixth place was taken by Ivan Carrier drawn on peg 2 with 26-0-0 of mostly carp again.
Next week’s match is a Soldiers and Sailors event on Coopers Lake at Weston on Trent.
