TF_GaryOff to Stafford Moor for the first time this weekend. Anyone got any hints, tips, top pegs, match info, etc? From the website it looks like it is all big pellet on the straight lead or pellet wag.

TF_spotter1707Talk to Andy Serry, he owns the place.
Go to the web site & I think there are links for fishing for silvers & the conker.
Pines for a good mixed bag, skimmers, tench, crucians & carp.
Tanners & Woodpecker fish the bomb to the islands & feed pellets over the top & pellet waggler.
Don’t neglect the silvers especially in woodpecker.

TF_JEFFERS15west ham have won there last 4 warm up games! just wait till the premeiership starts and i am sure the losing streak will be on again. lol. and yes i am a west ham fan!!! i am going to SM on sunday to fish the open and have a practice for the fisho maniac the weekend after. you really want to draw tanners or woodpecker. tanners 1,2, 18, 32-36 are all good pegs. straight lead with double 8mm or single 11mm. pellet waggler with single 8mm. feed a couple, cast, if not bite feed again, if still nothing feed and wind in recast and start the process again. pole fished banded 8mm works well on the pole especially in the margins. woodpecker 20-32, good bomb and pellet waggler pegs. hope this helps.

TF_GaryThanks chaps, very helpful.
Jeffers, is it a case of casting tight to an island or feature with the waggler/ bomb, or do you fish in open water? What kind of depth would you fish on the wag?
And also, is it worth trying pellet shallow on the pole?
-

TF_JEFFERS15casting tight will work, but sometimes you want to back off them. if you are in open water, try to find the shallower plateau’s and fish on top of them, take a while to explore you swim. i would start at about 18inches deep on the wag and see how it goes from there. i have not tried shallow on the pole as the fish tend to back off and i reckon would be scared by the pole. it is also worth taking paste to fish the conker or on the pole. one more piece of advice, if you are fishing the straight lead the smaller carp give wrap rounds, but the big carp just give you a rattle and a slight pull, it is worth picking up the rod when this happens, you will get a few like this.

TF_Dave PelletGary, I’m off down to Devon next weekend, staying in a little farmhouse cottage about 5 miles away from Stafford Moor
not got a lot of room for fishing gear with only a megane scenic, loaded with wife & 3 kids so it’s gonna be pellet waggler for me
hoping for a day on tanners fishing pellet wag & a day on pines trying to target the tench
anyone know which pegs on pines the tench favour? and would I be better off packing a 6m disposable margin pole as well as the pellet waggler rod??
fished it a couple of years ago on one of the first pegs you come to & got completely skimmered out, did manage half a dozen tench & crucians but want to do better this time

TF_dave brittainGary.
Bait wise you’ll need 8mm coarse pellet for the waggler and I use 10mm halibut for the lead. Main line for the float is 4lb maxima or 0.18 Teklon Gold to 0.18/0.20 hook length.
On the lead I use 6lb main line and 0.20 or 0.22 hook length.
Feed wise if you’re fishing the waggler feed 4-8 pellets 3 times a minute however some pegs respond better to the lead in which case you need to feed 6-10 pellets every few minutes to keep the fish down.
Peg wise there is such a variety on both Tanners and Woodpecker, however in the main you should feed an open water peg and also tight to an island, (most pegs have an island chuck), so you can alternate between the two feeding areas and work out where the fish are most prolific.
Sometimes especially on woodpecker if you can’t catch within 5ft of the island, (always feed slightly short, not too tight, so only a few pellets land tight to the island), you may have to go tight which is within 6ins of the grass/bank.
I should be there on Sunday but Andy Seary will give you info on your peg.
make sure you have plenty of bait and don’t rule out the pole because on some pegs the pole can do a lot of damage, (purple hydro or similar to 0.18 hook length).
If you go for skimmers you’ll need plenty of groundbait and micro pellet in addition to 6-8 tins of corn. Your target weight will be 60lbs and you’ll need floats ranging from 0.75g to 2g using a double bulk, (white hydro or similar to 0.12/0.14 hook length).

TF_Steve LockettLots of fish in the margins on Tanners now as well. 8mm banded or paste, but feed 8mm whatever is on the hook.
The bomb seems to be scoring more consistently now rather than the pellet wag. A few are catching on long pole on the deck with banded 8mm.I have a new film up following a residents’ match, shot a couple of weeks ago but not on Andy’s site yet. Check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rfe6UVF9EIU
I’ll be there on Tuesday for the Fish ‘N Chip match, say hello…

TF_GaryJust returned from a fantastic week. All the advice above was spot on and everyone down there was so friendly. I’ve never fished an open match before where so many of the locals are falling over themselves to help you out and give you info on your peg!
Drew peg 11 on Tanners on both the Tuesday and the Friday. Got battered both sides by the local pellet waggler boys on the Tuesday but then managed 2nd in the residents match of the same peg on the Friday, so at least I learned something! I will be wearing my Stafford Moor t-shirt with pride!
It does leave me with a massive dilemma though – after spending at least a couple of weeks a year at White Acres for the better part of 20 years, I now have to choose which to go to next year: Stafford Moor or White Acres?! ~think ~think ~think ~think
Really enjoyed Stafford Moor and Andy Seery really is a top bloke. ~clap ~clap ~clap ~clap

TF_Steve LockettGood to meet you there on Tuesday Gary, I take it you didn’t try down the edge like I suggested?
Couldn’t see you from where I was, and I had to dash off after the match to go up to the Midlands.
Hopefully see you there again next year…unless you decide to keep crossing the border into pastyland! -

TF_GaryI fished down the edge for most of the match on Tuesday, Steve. Landed 12 carp but lost lots in the tree roots – they certainly know how to find the snags! A very frustrating match as there were loads of fish there and I know that I got nowhere near the maximum out of that peg. I saw that you did well though, with a good ton. I think someone said that you got them on paste? Looking forward to hopefully having another go at it next year.
-
08/08/2010 at 9:20 pm #112934
TF_Steve LockettYeah, most on paste. Had 3 in the first 20 minutes down the edge then struggled until they settled in the last hour.
Similar yesterday, except I foulhooked a dozen in the last hour due to feeding all over the place in the wind – idiot! -

Be good to see you there.
As you found out, it is a very relaxed and relaxing place to spend some quality fishing time. Glad you enjoyed it. -

TF_GaryCheers Steve. The margin fishing approach definitely seemed to work, but only for short periods. I caught some proper lumps on it pleasure fishing (I had 4 fish for over 40lb off Tanners peg 3 fishing 4m off to the left!), but would generally catch mostly skimmers, roach and crucians until a couple of big carp drifted in.
-
09/08/2010 at 2:18 pm #112978
TF_Steve LockettYeah, I seem to catch two or three in the first hour and that’s it. Good way to get going, mind, and leaves all the other options open for later.

09/08/2010 at 3:05 pm #112985
TF_GaryCompletely agree. I know Dad had two carp in the first 10 mins down the edge in the Sunday match and I had two straight off in the Friday match (all down the edge), so it is definitely worth a try, even if it becomes a ‘throwaway’ line.

TF_Steve Lockett‘throwaway’ putting a couple of fish in your net for 15-20lbs while the main lines settle!
Love it.There’s a picture of Adrian with one of his fish from the Fish A Maniac final on my news page now at coarsefish-torbay.co.uk
