In the age of .6mm wire floats with 2 mm tips being the en vogue patterns how light would you be prepared to fish, I will give an example I’ve made some chimps type floats up with .6mm wire stems, the bodies are 4×10 and 4 x12 the problem is the 4 x 10 are virtually self cocking and the 4x 12 take 4 no 11 stotz . What’s your thoughts on this what’s the most important the bulk of the float or the density of the wire stem ?

Depends on depth, tow, wind. I don’t have many wire stem floats now, only using them in 1gm plus rigs where venue is shallow and prone to tow.

Some of the venues I fish are top 3-4 so tend to use longer carbon stems as often found wire bounced and tangled which when speed fishing at 14m + was only slowing things down and on a number of occasions meant second not first.

Thanks for response mike and thanks to the guys with the Pms. Interesestingly enough you mention wire stem floats cause more tangles than glass or carbon stems I think this is particularly the case when wire stems go right through the float for strength, this seems to unbalance and with this in mind I’m now playing about putting my tips into the bodies with a fibreglass spiggot with less wire stem in the float a better balance is achieved and they seem to cock quicker.
