Reading of all these tackle thefts lately is a bit unnerving. It has happened to me once before and it was devastating to me and I’m talking before poles were part of my armoury.
I keep my tackle as secure as I can and have incorporated my house alarm to cover my garage so if anyone does have a go at my tackle during the night the alarm will be triggered and I will know about it.

House contents insurance doesn’t seem to cover your tackle unless maybe you have everything itemised and documented then the premium goes through the roof.
Can anyone tell me of any specialist insurers out there who will insure say £5000 worth of tackle for an affordable rate?
        I don’t know of one!!!

I was with Korda Kover, I paid £400ish which was considerably more than most insurers, BUT it covered me for 99% of scenarios (or at least I had it on paper saying it does). Unfortunately Korda Kover ceased trading few months ago due to too many fraudulent claims.

I had my gear stolen last Thursday. Devastating is one way of describing it.

If you find a decent insurer, let me know. Plenty of people will reply stating ‘home contents insurance as a specified item / bolt on’. However, in my opinion a lot of people would be surprised should they ever need to claim (and I hope no one ever does!).

My house contents and ‘sports equipment bolt on’ is with Aviva, and it’s looking like I was not covered, even though I have paperwork in front of me stating I am.

Yes that’s my main point James, you can’t get decent insurance because it’s too open to exploitation and now none of us can get any decent cover at all so if you lose your tackle to these low life’s now you are almost certainly wiped out because most people cannot afford to go out and replace thousands of pounds worth of tackle.
It’s a really bad situation and I also agree with another comment on here I think your tackle was targeted, whoever it was who took it new exactly where your gear was and planned to relieve you of your treasured possessions when the time was right!!!

You can cover it on your house contents insurance. It wont cover it “in use” so if you break a section it wont be covered. However someone once ran over my pole holdall in a car park and this was covered ok.
I would not have thought theft would be a problem cover wise as the old bill will be involved and they will give you a crime number for insurers.
I never leave my holdall in my garage anymore even though its covered.
Obviously you need to make sure that the value you cover is ok for everything you need. Many try to skimp on this.

Is house contents insurance the only way to insure tackle now you think?

Just keep your rods and box in the house.
It will then be covered by your contents insurance.

Literally got off phone to my house contents insurer 5mins ago. I am with Aviva, have been for 4years, never made a claim on any insurance policy before, and have always paid the extra for ‘sports equipment’ to insure my gear while in the garage or van, I also had a Korda Kover policy for when my tackle was in use.

Long story short, I am not covered and Aviva couldn’t be any less helpful. This has now destroyed me and left me wondering what’s the point.

Total waste of an insurance policy, money and working hard to buy the things you like in life.

                    Merry f##king Christmas.

Your home contents cover is the best route you need to specify items and arrange accidental cover which covers your gear outside the house. The excess can be a problem for minor claims but I had two pole sections blow into the canal and successfully claimed minus the excess.
Always have photo evidence of your gear and ensure large items such as poles are specified individually on the policy. My garage is alarmed with frosted glass and windows that cant open, always ensure insurers are aware of your home security details particularly locks on doors and windows plus alarms.
Always shop around every year for the best deal assuming you have made no claims and let your insurer know how many years you have had no claims.
Most online applications do not allow you to input all relevant details so get a few competitive quotes and then ring directly or get an application form and detail everything as these are recorded and you have a copy the insurer cant wriggle out of any claim and you can ask them to confirm the cover and the terms ahead of the policy being put into force.

                            Thanks TheDog.

Having had a brief look at the AnglersFirstInsurance policy, the 10k cover offers only £500 from an unattended vehicle.

The two scenarios I most certainly want my gear covered is while in the garage, and while in my car.

I still reckon you can’t get decent insurance for stolen fishing tackle – That bird is long gone 🙁

I have just phoned Marsh Insurance with a number of queries regarding taking out one of their policies, the reply I got was ‘Unfortunately we are no longer able to offer fishing tackle policies’.

I would check your insurance policy mate.
