TF_Johnfish1It was only recently I came across a photo of my strangest capture when living down south one summers day a sail away bite on float fished luncheon meat ended in the capture of a terrapin. Maybe nothing to weird in that but I didn’t have the heart to throw it back, my mate had a huge garden pond and he kept it but the strangest thing it lived for over TWENTY YEARS. In the summer on warm days it hauled itself out on a rock and sunbathed most of the day now that is wired.
The only thing as hard as I’ve tried ive never caught another……… -

TF_fishtankgoneOn the– ST -HELEN’S CANAL , near the glass works it was full of tropical fish guppies ,mollies ,mountain minnows , angel fish ect and terrapin, – [the wiganers]— called them floating pies.
That was due to the water being warmed up through the factory and its process that made the GLASS.
It never got iced up and was always steaming around the inlets! 😉
If people had tanks and wanted some tropics , they would nip down to the canal and net or fish for them .
Now that recycling or is it restocking. 😀

TF_TarqunI was fishing Gold Valley (Canal Bank Gold Lake Peg 24) had a bite on the pole @6m struck about 18in of No. 14 elastic came out, I though I’ve got a slab here as it didn’t fight.
When it broke the surface it turned out to be one of those Frenzee keepnet rod rest heads, certainly one of the oddest angling captures I’ve had

TF_PaddyOne of the Oddest/Strangest things I have seen was a mate fishing for Pike on live baits – got a good run, hit it and brought in a 12lb Pike.
Stuck onto the side of the Pike was a Lamprey that must of weighed about 10oz and it was hanging on for dear life! probably _hit scared of being eaten if it let go!
Good to see though! -

TF_howsmichaI was fishing on the river don a few years ago catching dace and roach and the odd chub when I had a nice bite and reeled in to find a small catfish about 3 or 4 oz. I had never seen one before or since from the don so it must have been a oneoff.

TF_Time TravellerCaught a couple of small eels one Winters day very welcome at the time but they used to bury themselve in the mud with just their heas sticking out.
So it was always a bit of a jobe to tug them free, you just kept moving th erod around until them came out.
two in 2 chucks so a bite was a bite not unhappy, goes back in same spot….away goes the wag….eases into it, sure enough stuck in the mud.
After 10 minutes it finally came out, must be a gud un this….. it was a deep fat frier chip basket…… no don’t like eels !!!!!!

TF_mike pattinsonFished a lake one morning, hooked a good sized carp while playing the fish noticed that the reeds were moving quite a bit, thinking this was carp i began feeding the area by catty. After getting the fish to a netable possition only to have difficulty getting it into my landing net.
After several failed attempts i was begining wonder what was going on. Ten minutes later it became apparent. The carp a 17lb common was still attached to a 5m long top kit with red hydro, what looked like 15lb line and a size10
The reeds moving i assume where the top kit coming through as i never got a bite from that area the rest of the day.

TF_millieI remember fishing a winter league match once on ranskill it was rock hard in this section I drew infact nobody had a bite until someone had one with 3mins to go he played it ever so gently thinking it was a dog perch infact the whistle blew for time and the usual banter was calling “ping” etc when he thought he’d beat it up popped a ground bait feeder a big un as well the man was absolutely gutted and the rest of the section was pi$$ing theirselves with laughter!!!!!
Another story I was fishing the eastern region winter league a few yr back on a bloodworm match I drew just off the fliers on the flats in the boats the match started I cupped my bait in and strangely I couldn’t get a bite panic started to creep in then all of a sudden the float slid under, was after about 1.5hrs this,it was a strange fight this and up popped a dab it had took my joker hook bait once I got that out of my peg i had a fish every put in afterwards and paralysed the section,I’ve never caught another one since!!!!

TF_fishtankgoneWhen on the annual holidays in devon we got there early, as to get some early morning fishing off the pier before we could get in the chalet.
Got on the pier when I looked down toward a patch of bubbles ,as it was early morn I was mesmerised by the swirls .
Then even more to my surprise was I when a fishing rod rose out the water like [Arthur’s sword], then a reel, then a hand of a diver who asked me if I could find a use for it and guess what that was ??? A big smile and a yes thanks , as I walked down the steps to him .
It must not have been in for more than a day or so, as when I cleaned the rod and reel they were as new ,well done that diver . 😀

TF_Man of KentAs a schoolboy I took a trip to a local lake where there used to be plenty of pike only to find a couple of schoolmates already spinning in one of the favoured areas, I went to have a chat with them and as one drew his spinner close to the bank and he hooked something that just wouldn’t come off bottom.. the tug of war up a foot or two, back down to the bottom went on for a good while each time with a cloud of bubble when it hit the deck. the fight was clearly going nowhere; just up and down, so I volunteered to handline it. It was obviously something pretty sizeable as I struggled to move it by hand too. eventually it came up and I managed to get a dartboard to the bank.
Perhaps les surprising, I’ve hooked a couple of Alligators in Florida whilst bass fishing. The most entertaining one was on a resort gold course when spinning for large mouth bass, which I hooked right in the tip of its snout when it tried to take a bass from the hook. I played it for 45 mins and could get its front feet on the bank before it retreated into the water to death roll. The pond was in the middle of a gold course and by the time I pulled for a break, I had about 10 golfers watching and taking photos. It was only a small one at around 5 feet. The other one was bigger at around 6-7 feet, which charged over to the disturbance caused by my little plastic lure also intended for bass, It just sat over the lure before moving off with the line round its leg. When the line tightened, the hook pulled into its leg, but being a much bigger specimen than the other one the fight didn’t last anywhere near as long.

TF_dirkdigglerI caught a swan on A1 pits whilst carp fishing many years ago.
It was very weird when my alarm went off and I struck only to see the line rise out of the water attached to the nasty stupid bugger.
And lets clear this up straight away………………wooo they can break a mans arm you know………..pphhtt yeah right they’re just the same as any other birds you may have the misfortune to hook, all fire and brimstone till you get your hand round their gizzard then it’s oh go on kill me then
Swans are especially dumb though as I returned the miscreant completely unharmed of course and then it sat in the margin all afternoon hissing at me.
What a dick. -

TF_PaddyDirk – ha ha, reminds me of a time when 2 of us saw a swan swimming around with a hook length hanging from its beak – we dropped bait into the water and it came over, won its confidence by keep feeding it until it was eating off an empty peg.
When he was scoffing like a good un, we grabbed him round the neck, pulled him up to the front of the platform so his wings could not flap so much and removed the hook and line.
Its deffo a “don’t do this at home” moment!!!
Angry beasties when there captured and held.
Worth while though 🙂
