A recent highlight at Rutland Water was the Youth Day organised by Rutland Water Fly Fishers. 70 youngsters took to the water, supported by over 45 volunteers, many of whom were RWFF members. The youngsters caught 34 fish between them. Chris Evans of RWFF says “It was a great introduction to fly fishing and we hope these young anglers are hooked for life. A big thank you to all the volunteers who took time to help. Thanks also to Anglian Water for their support with running the event and sponsoring the boats and to the Fly Dressers Guild for providing some world class fly tying tuition on the day.”The best fish of the week fell to Lincolnshire angler Ian Whiteside who netted a superb conditioned 6lb 3oz Rainbow that took him down to the backing on his reel! This was a personal best from Rutland for Ian.
The high temperatures impacted on the number of anglers fishing this week but those who made the effort were rewarded with some excellent sport, mostly from the boats. A number of limits were taken – some in less than three hours! The aeration system at Rutland attracted boat anglers with many tactics involving the usual sinking lines and mini lures accounting for a good many fish. The anglers who chose to fish floating midge tip lines with nymphs, nymph/lure combinations also made contact with fish feeding on daphnia in general.
Of the few anglers who ventured down the Arms, season ticket holder Peter De Kremer managed 6 fish all on dries including two Browns, one of which was estimated over 5lb.

Fish week 437 (season 18,823) Returns 129 (3,614) Rod average 3.38 (5.2)
The fishing at Grafham Water has picked up for both bank and boat anglers with a very good summer rod average of 3.38. The biggest Brown of the week was a cracking over wintered fish of 4lb 8oz, caught by Bob Wray of Ware in Hertfordshire. Bob caught this specimen from Savages Creek on a floating line with a red holographic diawl bach.Boat anglers have had a good week with the vast majority of the fish being caught in the top three feet of the water. Floating and midge tip lines have been the most successful with snail patterns, diawl bachs, crunchers, cats whisker booby, brown dabblers and yellow or red cdc’s. The most productive boat areas have been Savages Creek, Sanctuary Bay, M and J Buoys, Gaynes Cove and the Dam Tower (no anchoring).
Bank anglers have had a good week’s sport with the Dam again producing the most consistent catch rates on floating lines with shrimp patterns, hares ears, diawl bachs, claret hoppers and cdc’s. G Buoy and Deep Water Point have also produced some good sport over the past week but this hasn’t been consistent.

Fish behaviour has been changeable with the recent hot weather. In bright, hot conditions fish have been showing on top and then when it has been overcast and breezy they have disappeared.Stuart Rowe managed to find some better fish, fishing in the main basin on a sink line and minkie booby to take 6 lovely fish all around the 3lb mark.
The Tuesday Night Boat League, had a fantastic attendance of 14 anglers. The best methods were floating or midge tip lines and blobs and nymphs fished washing line style. Pete Webb still leads the way with only two weeks remaining. Close on his heels are Charlie Watts, Geraldline Harris and Terry Bayes. Seamus Halliday was the victor on Tuesday night and wins a free boat for his efforts.
The trial of spinning with lures continues though this method seems to be of more interest to Perch anglers and some quality fish have come to the method. The Angling Times did a feature on the water and reportedly a Perch of 4lb 12oz was caught and released.

Anglers have adapted well to the hot challenging conditions with floating and slow sinking lines catching fish. The best fish of the week was a cracking 6lb Rainbow taken by Roy Swinfield on a diawl bach in Catwalk Corner. James Day and Tom Powell had a fantastic day on Saturday, having over 40 fish to the boat, including a 5lb 4oz Rainbow for James. They used a floating line, coral booby and olive crunchers from a drifting boat. The bank has also been producing fish on the same methods, with morning and evening best. The best methods have been floating line and the washing line method with a booby or dry on the point followed by diawl bachs, crunchers or small hoppers on the droppers. When it is hot and still a slow sink line with nymphs, lures or blobs have been working.
