Similar but not quite the same as discussions on peak Oil, which is a finite resource.
Since my grandfather’s day (google Beverton & Holt) fisheries scientists have been recommending sustainable catch limits. The fisheries science is by no means perfect – but it has constantly improved over that time (ref. CEFAS website etc).
Equally since that day, politicians in UK and Europe have been caving in to short term pressures and setting quotas above sustainable points.
The similarity to the oil debate is that the only viable solution is for total consumption to fall.
Geeps, I think that this subject is important enough to merit a sticky link on the (more frequented) coarse fishing forum – if only becuase of the potential for increased predation of inland waters by marine predators (cormorants, seals).
