        REPORT
The first Championship match of the new season was fished jointly with Soldiers & Sailors Angling Club at Beechwood Park on the 40 peg Kingfisher Lake, and with an excellent attendance there were anglers all around the lake leaving a spare peg between each two anglers.
Although the lake generally fished well, the “upwind” and sheltered bank (the high numbers) did not produce as many fish as the rest of the lake and all the top weights were from pegs 2 to 24.
Top weight was taken by Soldiers’ Paul Marriott with a creditable 62-12 from peg 2. Paul started by casting a method feeder close to the island towards the empty peg 3, and soon caught small carp on a regular basis. After an hour he switched to long pole with meat, also fished towards the island and was rewarded with a far better stamp of fish. By alternating between the two methods throughout the match he kept fish interested, although the last hour on the pole saw a much better catch rate.
On peg 24 Dave Cotterill fed pellet throughout the match at the bottom of the far shelf. He started baiting with three dead maggots for a few fish. A switch to banded pellet saw his catch rate improve to take second place with 43-04.
Defending Club Champion Rob Pembridge was on peg 19 and had a slow start trying several methods without much success. However, good carp moved onto his meat feed at 7m and he finished the match strongly to put 40-00 on the scales for third place.
Len Barker (peg 5) took fourth place with 39-02, ahead of Soldiers’ angler Paul Skinner who had 35-08 from peg 7, and Keith White who had 34-00 from peg 13.
Match Two (for the Victoria Cup) is on Sunday 31 May at Blake Hall on Peninsular Lake.
