Preston Innovations have signed a 4 year, £50,000 deal with the Angling Trust to sponsor a new coarse angling match – Preston Innovations World Club Classic – for teams finishing in the top ten of the Division 1 National Championships.
Ten teams of six anglers will compete on 25th and 26th of September 2010 for the chance to represent England in the FIPSed World Club Championships in Serbia in 2011. The winning team will receive £7,000 to help them represent their country and the winning individual a cheque for £1,000.
Although England is widely recognised as the leading coarse angling nation in the world, our team has never won the FIPSed World Club Championships and the generous support of Preston Innovations will give the teams a financial boost to help them fish more competitively. The competition is intended to give a new focus for the elite end of the sport and will also attract the interest of the Team England selectors.
The venue and rules will be circulated by the Angling Trust Competition and Events Manager to all the teams who will fish in this year’s Nationals and will be posted on the web site.
Ricky Teale, Director of Preston Innovations said: “We are very pleased to be involved with this style of event would like to thank the Angling Trust for allowing Preston Innovations to be part of what could be one of the biggest weekends in the angling calendar. Match angling is going through a change in the UK and events like this should help increase interest both with anglers and the angling press.â€

This is a right kick in the balls to the team who finishes first in the national I personally think , why should you be crowned top national team & then have to fish again against all the other teams that you beat in the main competition absolutely ludicruis IMO

With the loss of the super league competition, all teams were wondering what the summer would hold.

Now every team in the division 1 national will be giving it there all to get into the top 10.
A big event with an even bigger reward is a real bonus for team fishing in the UK.

We will be giving it everything on the Trent and if we are lucky enough to get to the final 10, we will give it even more.

                Brilliant!

couldnt agree more, even more incentive for some of the smaller clubs punching above their weight to be given a once in a lifetime chance to compete with the very best

Kick in the teeth for the smaller teams that fish the national in hope of winning and getting to world club champs, good for the big 4.

How can you win the most prestigious team match fishing competition in the country then have to fish again to qualify for the world club champs ? doesn’t make sense to me why wouldn’t Preston just sponser the Div 1 national winning team in the world club champs?

Only 4 or 5 uk teams will ever fish the world club champs again it will never be an incentive for the small clubs if they finish in the top 10 on the National then have even more expense only to get beaten by the cream in this farse.

That’s what its all about, when tipton were one of the favourites for div 1 last year Mark Downes actually said what’s the point of you qualifying for world club champs, he is probably right but that was the incentive for most smaller teams. I would personally enjoy fishing this preposed final as i enjoy that type of match but i don’t think it’s fair on the div 1 winners.

                                  Terrific idea.

I see one or two doubters but for the so called “smaller” teams, getting a chance to fish two days against other “top” teams is a prize in itself. At least this way if anyone ever gets there who hasn’t got the big names and the sponsorship deals then these funds will be a big boost along with the fully deserved plaudits and confidence the rest of the matchfishing world will have in their ability to give it a good go.

I don’t think for a minute any team other than the really established and successful teams thinks about qualifying for the world club championships as an incentive for doing well at the Nationals, so the possibility that no minnows will ever qualify over 2 days again seems little disincentive for most of us.

Personally anything that can lift the profile of the Nationals again and remind people that participating in the biggest match of the year is worth the travel, cost, walks etc is a great thing. I arrived at match fishing too late in life and after the peak of these but for all the moaning, when the guys are on festivals and kicking back a few beers, there seems to be many great experiences and days out to be talked about and a genuine fondness for those large scale matches. If this gets a few teams to get back involved then that seems a good thing.

Glad to see loads of positive feedback from this.

As for the venue… I know Preston Innovations will make sure that the venue for the final will be as similar as possible to the World club champs final venue. So big river may see it on the Bristol Avon, Big Canal will see something like Stainy or Gloucester.
Ricky Teale is an intelligent guy and I can guarantee that it will be THE event of the year.

As for suiting the big boys… Below are the top ten teams from last year’s national, all of which would have put in great teams of 6 for a final oh and NO Dorking, Trentmen or Barnsley for a start! So this is not a cut and dry competition by any means.

                                    1 Shakespeare Redditch
                                    2 Collins Green
                                    3 Daiwa Doncaster DAA
                                    4 Team Last Cast
                                    5 Fox Match Tipton VDE
                                    6 Sams Tackle Wigan
                                    7 Birkenhead Centre
                                    8 Eclipse AC
                                    9 Starlets AS
                                    10 Luton AC

Tell me any of those teams would not want a chance to win £7000 and a place in the world club champs. Exciting stuff.

Reply #11 – Today at 10:29am come on lads we all fish the nationals and just how much time do you give them unless its on your door step and lets be about right any team could win it its a great idea and its a tremulous amount of money going into a sport that hasn’t had any new input for years or new ideas
with so many individual competitions and pairs matches on next years calendar you will be hard pressed to get 10 anglers wanting to put time and effort into the national
my point of view is it just might encourage team members to site up and be counted and put the time and effort in now
fishing in europe isn’t cheap and often makes and brakes teams now you have a chance to witness it for yourself with some backing
the sensas final is the best competition I’ve fished in these European match anglers are the nearest I’ll ever get to a world championship take a look at the footage i found earlier a few topics down you think you’ve got some kit ask me would i fish it again !yes i would I’d love to go every year thats how good it is [thats coming from me who at the moment won’t travel to the stainy???must be going though a middle age Chrisse’s ]
not everyone feels the same and 80% of the national teams won’t change there thoughts about nationals even with this new idea but it a start to reinvent team match fishing

Maybe it is me but surely the idea of the top 10 clubs in Div 1 containing minnows is somewhat disparaging. All the teams mentioned are IMO elite angling team professional in everything but pay. It is a fantastic idea and could even attract television coverage.

This is awesome news. We won the Div 2 last year on the trent so it’ll be exciting to go back this year for this potential prize. Exactly what the big national day needed to revitalise it.

When’s the Winter League final again? Wasn’t that moved into September?
