Dave Harrell is touting a novel pairs idea that would see two anglers fishing from the same peg. Dave, the man behind the successful Riverfest series, believes it could encourage more pleasure anglers back onto running water.

He said: “A lot of pleasure anglers don’t match fish because you are isolated for five hours. This new concept gets over that and makes it a much more sociable occasion.”

The idea, which is already in place in some European countries, could be particularly successful in my view if an experienced river angler was paired with a novice, allowing the less experienced angler to gain confidence and learn while he or she match fishes.

        Thoughts?

Think it was tried out a few years ago, certainly help with bringing new blood into the Match scene if one was a novice, never won a match at any level, hard to police that though.

But as match anglers are out to win would doubt it would be more than a novelty, but never know until we try. European matches are much shorter novices less likely to get distracted than in our 5 hour+ events that we seem to prefer.

I wouldn’t want my mate in the same peg though, it’s bad enough having hime in the same lake, no the same complex worse in even the same County, what a gob !!!

I believe it’s called an Americano and was successful some years ago on the GUC at Harefield.
Only real issue I can see on rivers is finding enough pegs that can cater for two people at a time but tactically would be very interesting to see how a pair attacks their peg ! Great idea to change the standard way we fish matches in this country but please don’t start confusing it by introducing any silly rules like both competitors must use different methods ie one float one feeder !

Have fished a few pairs matches in Belgium both fishing from the same peg and must admit its great either both fishing the same or one trying something different but as someone mentioned on a river might be more difficult as you might struggle to find enough proper pegs to fish from venues like Evesham would be fine but how many river venues are like that .
