TF_punchcrumbWhich knot do people use for tying loops for the loop to loop system? there seems to be a fashion for the figure of eight knot these days but I always seem to get a larger loop than i would like when tying this knot.
I have tried the sensas loop tyers with varying degrees of success but was looking at a video by Tom pickering and he suggested the simple double overhand knot which I to used for years thinking It was ok but nowadays everyone seems to be suggesting the figure of eight as strongest what do people use? -

TF_JohnHI recall years ago meeting Alan Scothorne at a trade show in Doncaster.
I asked him this question and he asked me to tie a knot my way and then he would show me his way. I used the Pickering style knot on some 016 line, he asked me to pull it sharply and it broke at the knot. He then showed me the figure of 8 knot using the Sensas green knot tyer and asked me to break that. When the line broke it was not at the knot
I visited the local tackle shop and bought the Sensas device and now cant fish without it.,
I recall early videos by Ivan and his knot knowledge was poor, he used the overhand loop knot and simple granny knots and they were fine for him so I guess you pays your money and takes your choice. The Finn by comparison pays a great deal of attention to knot detail on his DVD’s. -

TF_fishcatcher4I have always used a double overhand knot for more years than i care to mention and never been broken at the knot.
I suppose there are a lot of variables as to why a line should snap , balanced tackle ,your fishing style etc or maybe i have just been lucky.
There does seem to be a lot of respected anglers saying the figure of eight is stronger so they are probably right and they also catch a lot more fish than me but its whatever suits you. -

TF_paulnewellSo far it seems some believe there is a double overhand loop , and then a separate figure of eight ..! No it’s the same thing . Try it with some thick line and you will see a double overhand loop falls naturally into a figure of eight . I have used this for years , one on the rig line and one on the hooklength . There are many , anglers including some International stars that use this and can’t be assed to change . I know that if you are after barbel and carp this knot is not the strongest .! Indeed some finalists on the Riverfest Final got caught out !! You must make sure to pull your knots tight with absolute even lengths slowly with a bit of spit for lube . Loop to loop is quick and simple , but if specimen fish are your quarry you should get to grips with more recommended types . Click onto Angling knots , Superstrong knots for monofilament . Etc Etc and try U tube , I think Roy Marlowe shows some . Apparantly the knot less knot most of us use is not the best ?? But it works for many . Worst Knott is the half blood knot . But some of my best success was with this .  😮

TF_punchcrumbDid a little test of my own today by tying a double overhand knot at each end of some 0.11 powerline and pulling for a break using a loop of thick wire placed through each loop and after three attempts the line broke every time a short way from the loop knot.
I didnt try the same method with a figure of eight knot so not sure how that works but if you tie a double overhand loop and pull on both the main line and the tag the knot is likely to unravel where as do the same with a figure of eight and It appears not to.
As mentioned previously Its down to personal preference but I will probably be swayed towards using a figure of eight for carp and barbel and the standard double overhand for everything else.
Just to add a twist I tried passing the loop through three times on the overhand knot and if you can put up with a slightly chunkier knot on your loop It did appear to be stronger I do need to do the straight pull for a break test though. -

TF_paulnewellMy apologies , even though my double overhand loop gives a figure of eight it’s not the same and there is a separate figure of eight knot . Ask the laptop to show the different knots and it will ! Also suggesting the double overhand only achieves 55percent of line strength . Not yet found the strength of the figure of eight .

TF_RutilusI think back in the days of Ivan Marks & co knot strength was not so much an issue due to it mostly being silver fish fishing.
Today, with carp on hi-tech pre-stretched lines, knot type selection is critical imoA figure of eight is definitely stronger and the carp will have you every time if you dare to give them a half blood to pull on 😮

TF_punchcrumbDo a search for non slip loop knot follow the instructions on the online video and practice the knot its not that hard as long as your not tying it in quite fine diameter line, even i could tie it after a few goes.
Not sure you can use this loop to make your hook lengths exact lengths but the knot seems neat and is surposed to be mega strong probably better suited to heavyish lines try it and see what you think. 😀 -

TF_paulnewellYes the problem starts trying to tie them the right length for you retaining box . But I’ve been told sensas do a plastic gizmo that works well. It’s supplied with a diagram on how to achieve the figure of eight . On long hooklengths for big fish the length of the loop isn’t that important . 🙂
