Venue’s own keepnets

I just fished a match at the weekend at a raker lakes, york. You have to use their keepnets. After landing a fish and transferring the fish to from the landing net to the keepnet, the fish hit the top keepnet ring, the keepnet collapsed and the fish went back in the lake. This cost me from winning my section. NOT A HAPPY TEDDY BEAR!!!!!! When i pointed the net out to the venue owner he replied ‘yeah, it is f*&ked’. thanks, i just told you that.

Why do venues that expect us to use their own nets (which i do not have a problem with as it then stops the car stinking out) always provide nets of such poor quality. When setting the net up, it seemed okay. after the fish knocked the top of the net, the net did not seem to go back properly.

I know the reason behind using their own nets such as fish conservation, less diseases, better nets than some anglers may have.

My net is better than the one they issued me with and providing that i dry it out, there will be less chance of diseases being transferred.

Another venue i frequently fish in winter (Langwith Lakes) also issues their own nets, which are even worse, the tilt head mechanism needs holding up with another bank stick, holes in the nets, etc

WHY? Why do venue owners do this?

Mike, Rakers nets usually aren’t that bad. Langwiths are/were? the worst i’ve seen by far although a mate said Norman was getting some new nets (unconfirmed as of yet)and at willitoft you have to pay for her nets unless you use your own which kind of defeats the object.

The reason for some nets being below standard is often because other anglers abuse them.

I always check fisheries own keep nets and landing nets for holes and that they lock in the right position to attach to my box before i take them. Saves messing around or having fish loses because of problems like you have had.

I think anglers wreck the nets or for example when Whiteacres tried this several years ago the nets started getting stolen by anglers.

thm nets at langwith are really crap, i had to walk back and pick 2 more up as the 1s i 1st picked up where shite but ddint realise till i got to my peg,

The ones at Decoy are not too clever either, as for Lodge Farm at Fishlake here in Yorks…….fug me 22″ carp nets halved in depth and then tied up with plastic tie wraps so that there is a big knot on the underside of the net!!!

Simple fact is why don’t fishery ‘ owners’ say use your own but as soon but as you get to your peg open the landing and keepnets out for the UV rays to kill any bacteria??

i know what you mean mick, i was at langwith last week and there were lots of complaints about nets. norman must be earning plenty enough in one week to buy more nets , and im sure the way the tackle trade is suffering atm , they would be more than happy to supply 100 plus nets, at a decent cost.

WHY? Why do venue owners do this?

Because they value their fish stocks. Locally, we fish four venues that supply their own nets and those fisheries have NEVER had a problem with fish deaths. I can’t name another four fisheries in the South of England that allows anglers to use their own nets and that haven’t had incidences of fish deaths.

If the fishery supplies nets then they have total control of disinfecting etc. If you’re relying on match anglers to follow rules such as laying nets out to dry then they’re tempting financial ruin.
