TangleratHi guys,
Some of you may remember me from a few years back before I downsized myself back to Ireland…
I’ve not been posting much on here since, but I’ve been more active over on the sea-angling-ireland forum.
Here’s where your help with a letter or email would be useful:
Proposed Angling Ban in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown
As you may be aware, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council are proposing to ban
angling from ALL of its shoreline, with the exception of Bullock and Colliemore
Harbours.1)This is utterly unnecessary, there is almost no real conflict between swimmers
and anglers.2) There have been no serious accidents or incidents between swimmers and
anglers3) Anglers tend to use the beaches most at times when there is little or no
swimming4) Where there are demonstrable difficulties, anglers would be quite happy to
restrict their use of the beach at particular times in particular places, the
problem is with a blanket ban, and only designated exceptions to that ban5) This is an issue of personal freedom, and the proposed by-law is an
unnecessary restiction of our freedoms.6) A note to the councillors-Anglers are passionate about anging and will vote
on that basis, few swimmers have any problem with anglers and a ban like this
will not gain any votes7) Sea-angling is becoming a major tourist activity
8) There was no consultation with the Fisheries Boards, Tourist Board, local
Angling Clubs, or for that matter the Blue Flag section of An Taisce. We would encourage all anglers, particularly those in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown, to
object to these proposed by laws.A copy of the by-laws, and other notices, may be found here –

Guys, the short version is that this County Council is proposing to ban without consultation All Recreational Sea Angling from it’s shoreline apart from 2 designated areas.
Think about that for a moment!
There’s a long topic on this over on the SAI forum (note to mods: dunno if I can post links, if not please edit as necessary), but basically some letters/emails of outrage/disgust to the CoCo from British Anglers would go a long way to helping out.
Many thanks, and Hi to all the old names who know me.

TangleratGood on yers lads, it’s great to get support.
The worrying thing about this is it’s the first time a Local Authority in Ireland has taken on itself to impose such a draconian ban. We’re trying to strangle it before birth, when it’s still at the proposal stage.
Just think of the consequences for all the UK anglers who come here on holiday specifically to fish our shores for Bass……..!

Frank24ParticipantHi ratty, thanks for posting the sea-angling-ireland dun laoghaire link on the TSF forum. I moved over to dublin from england 3years ago, and fish dun laoghaire and associated beaches regularly. i dont get online much anymore, i use sea-angling-ireland.org occasionally, but hadn’t seen or heard anything about the councils proposals until i saw your post, must have had my head in the sand! thanks for making other people aware, including me. will do my bit towards campaigns now, just wanted to say thanks for raising the ssue, otherwise I think i’d have not known until it was too late,
I hope other forum members get involved and can do their bit, thanks to anyone that helps out.

iowaWhilst a complaint from myself would have some bearing, as I am Dublin born, I do not see that UK based non ROI nationals can help or carry any weight beyond moral support. You can but try I suppose, Magna Carta of course does not apply.

TangleratStrangley and sadly iowa, it’s precisely non ROI nationals that would have the greatest impact.
Ireland has been promoted as an angling tourist destination. If those potential tourists all started writing in to say that they wern’t coming any more because of this idiocy, then the impact of those letters would be felt much much more so than locals writing in.
Rest assured guys, any help you in the UK can offer would have a massive impact. It adds an international dimension to what started off as a Local Authority proposal. I’ll bet they never expected that! 😉
Any letter/email stating that you as a UK angler could not return/come to Ireland as a result of this proposal passing into law would be worth dozens of letters/emails from us locals.
