I really enjoyed today, the fishing wasn’t as bad as some suggested it would be and it was nice meeting Gareth and the other lads in the team. -

TF_tomleggeReally enjoyed the day on Boris’s old stamping ground (despite my woeful performance in E section).
Great to see loads of old friends at the draw then top up my tan while dodging cyclists and dog’s eggs, trashing rigs and listening to England’s latest humbling in sport by Bangladesh.
Well done to all promoted teams + all individuals who managed a ‘drag’.
Also to the Angling Trust’s event organisers, whose choice of HQ opposite a superb chip shop was pure genius. Fishcake, large chips and curry sauce – lovvvvely! -

TF_geepsterParticipantReally proud of the team and obviously a bit gutted because we were only 16 points off promotion to Division One.
Team result is here:
http://www.nfaresults.co.uk/2010/div2_team.phpPlenty of hard luck stories….
Johnny Atkins lost a 15lb carp that would have won him the section by miles and in the top three overall – he was geared up too – 20s elastic, 0.20 line. He turned it as well, but it got into the lilies. More guttingly though he had eight 4oz hemp roach taken by pike, he never got one of them in. Two of them would have got us enough points for promotion.
RedArmy was in a really tough section, but lost a 1lb 8oz perch that would have seen him weigh in over a kilo. The fish got into some weed and he could clearly see it on the bottom in front of him. He just couldn’t get it out.
That would have been top six in section instead of half way, again enough for promotion.
I was 14th in D section, but another 2oz would have got me five more points – and yes I did lose more than that.
It’s been a dream of mine to put together a team from the site to get into Division One rather than draft a load of anglers in suited to certain venues each year. We nearly did it.

TF_JabjabWell done carp cruncher! I was on peg 8 – I think we had a chat before the match about how rubbish our end of the section was supposed to be!

TF_wildingukComplete legend, national section winner. Well done to all the team. Despite the fishing being tough, I really enjoyed it. Well chuffed with 39 points from a peg with no features and only 4m down the track of fishable water.
Again like Geepster I lost a couple of fish that could have got us a few more vital points. Losing my one and only hemp roach to a pike that went straight through the shoal with half hour or so to go was gutting. Though for once in my match fising career I can’t think of anything I would have done different, except maybe putting my punch line down the middle 11m from me, instead of at 10 o clock down the track. I could still see my punch crumb at the end of the match it was that clear.
Great team effort though, and so near. We beat some good teams, and most who beat us are div one teams anyway, most of them canal teams too. Roll on next year if I’m invited to fish, be good to keep the same team and see if we can’t get promoted. Just hope the basingstoke canal isn’t quite as weedy and has a bit more colour!

CastermasterParticipantHad the easiest National ever of my life yesterday!
I won B section (which I knew was hard up there, but hadn’t practised that high up the canal.) Main team plan which I suspect like everybody else was the squatt, but we kicked off with worm down the track. Caught a 2oz perch first chuck, one about 10z second chuck then another one about 6/7oz shortly after.
Had a bit of a go on my squatt line and caught a couple, dropped back in on my worm line then it went straightaway, with a bream that must have been 4lbs on the end, happy days!

cathalParticipantWell done lad. Excellent result on a venue that you hadn’t fished before!

12/07/2010 at 8:34 am #110073
TF_redarmygutted i rotated 5 different worm swims as well as my small fish lines, had 1 bite in 5 hours was geared up 14,s elastic 0.18mm straight through and a 14,s b560 1.5lb perch went straight under a snag and couldnt budge it i could see a large white belly stuck on the bottom that fish would of give me 53 points instead of 30

TF_jonoI was at stanton gate E section literally right next to the M1 bridge. All 19 pegs to my right had dense reedbeds while i had a barren concrete far bank with no weed. 2 pegs to my left also dense reedbeds lol. So i knew i was up against it. Had 30 fish for 900 gms and 31 pts. Ten perch on choppie and 20 squatt fish. Get a fish then nowt for a bit. Ended up fishing squatt a foot deep to get a few shallow. Most to my right broke a kilo but a lot to my left did worse. Big bream shoal though around E50 near sandy bottom lock. Roll on next year!

TF_bluebottleParticipantJono
Unlucky draw that is mate all the best pegs to your right like you say .I drew the same peg in the winter league .Just a perch hole ,there used to be some chub under the motorway bridge not been seen for ages though.I think you`ll enjoy basingstoke canal better loads of skimmers and odd carp in sections . I fished it about 6 years ago in a national ,look out for the crayfish they like choppy.
