Hook size is dependant upon the size of the pellet, nothing else.

          Personally I would use 18 for 4mm, 16 for 6mm and either a 16 or maybe a 14 for 8mm.

By the way, the same applies to all baits. Have a look at the bait on the hook and ask yourself ‘Does that look reasonable or too big/small?’

Wire thickness and hook strength are other considerations and are more dependant upon the size of the fish and how you want the bait to behave.

I almost always us 18 B911 and if they are having it 16 b911 but only on 8mm pellet, never would I use a 14 you just get nowhere near as many bites

thanks lads , psb – think your right on gettin more bites with smaller hook. been using 16 b 911 on 8mil catching but not as many as other people seem to do , questioned it the other day and someone said the same as you , get more bites with size 18 .

Hard or soft pellet? I would suggest that an 18 is too small for 8mm hard pellet. Probably a soft pellet as well. In my opinion fish don’t see the hook just the pellet if you feed it correctly and get them competing with each other.

re size 14 hooks, question referred to pole and pellet wag so a 14 would be ideal for a 8mm pellet on the wag imo

There are lots of different reasons for being beaten off the next peg. If it was consistently happening then by all means try using a smaller hook but in my opinion that is unlikely to be the cause. Much more likely is the feeding or just that the fish wanted to be on the next peg for some reason.

Of course one hook manufacturers 14 is another ones 16 so that needs to be considered as well!

In my opinion, if you get the fish feeding well up in the water you can get away with going a bit over the top (for want of a better phrase!) I’ve won quite a few matches (and had a few ton’s) by fishing banded 4mm pellets on a 16 B911. It looks a bit wrong (you wouldn’t do it on the deck, but get them going right and they’ll nail it!

                              Just out of curiosity….

apart from hook size/type, what about colour. Has anybody tried matching the colour of the hook to the colour of the bait….

or would it be a waste of time and effort..
