        Hi all.

Besides my annual Ireland trip, I have managed to blag the missus into letting me have a week at w/a’s this summer.

The only stumbling point is that I have to take the wife and child with me, and therefore won’t be able to fit my spacestation and other larger items of kit in the car.

Ideally, I would have fished the matches down there but seeing as I’m gonna have to do the family thing i’ll be limited to the amount of fishing i will do (prob restricted to evening sessions).

Bearing this in mind, and the limited space, what kit should i take and what should I leave behind. I was thinking along the lines of a tip rod and a float rod in a ready rod holder, a bag of terminal tackle, landing net and deck chair. This will be me first time to w/a’s so any advicewould be appreciated.

        Thanks

I think you may be a bit sick when you get there and you haven’t got ALL your gear. I’ve been loads of times, mostly with family. There’s loads to do with the family, Newquay, beaches, Eden project etc.
When I go with family I usually fish a couple of times in the evening and two matches. You may want to borrow a bigger car or trailer? ~think LOL

Joking aside, I know someone who goes with the wife and 2 lads, he goes in the car with the gear and suitcases etc, she flies down to Newquay airport, it’s only 10 mins from whiteacres and I think the flights are quite cheap ( and quick)

That’s right about the airport. I have a mate who lives on site at WA, his family usually fly down from Manchester, they say it’s cheaper than driving.

If I was in your position, I think I would take, two feeder rods and a margin pole. The feeder rods will do all the bomb and method fishing that does a lot of the damage there at the moment, and the margin pole will do you for fishing at top 4 on jennys in the evening for lumps on paste which is great fun!

Personally I would spend my time waggler fishing for the silvers with caster, hemp and maggot. There are some huge silver fish in the well established lakes.

Put all your gear in the car then see if you can fit the wife, lad and luggage in the motor if you can’t just set off and leave them stood on the drive. Then at least she cannot say you didn’t try. lol

Dont give up on the gear so easily. I am a regular at W/A and have a 350mile trip. I have managed just about all the gear for 2 anglers, wife and 3 kids in a standard saloon car. Take your rods/poles out of the holdall and pack them inside the car by the side of the seats. Your holdall will collapse down and pack with the spare wheel. As for a box, take a platform and just a top tray. Its amazing how much gear you can pack in if you think about it. The Gorman family have two top anglers with all the gear and mum and dad, they travel from Manchester and only have a small car not much bigger than a Cleo and they manage ok seat boxes and all.

True John, we used to fit everything into the punto! Mum, Dad the two of us, two boxes, several poles, rods, etc… It can be done, its just a matter of will and how good you are at tetris!

Hello Michael when are you down this year and how is Uni going?
We are down in June for a week, in July we are trying Stafford Moor just for a change. I am having some difficulty with the family going as the weather over our last few visits to W/A has been dreadfull.
We have 2 grandsons now and Gary is away in London so too many family distractions I am affraid.
I also think the site has changed for the worse IMO since touring stopped and owners vans took over, just my opinion of course.

                                JohnH,

                                On your last comment,

How do you work that one out John?

I thought it had improved ….again IMO ..

I got me, the wife, 3 kids, luggage and all my gear down to W/A in the Mondeo. I had to get a Matchbox seatbox as the Rive wouldn’t go in. What i did get is a 190cm roof box off ebay for £25 that my pole, rods, nets, box legs, wifes shoes and push chair went into. Then the seatbox minus legs and all the luggage went in the boot. Weather was a nightmare, thought 2 weeks in August would be nice and hot but it rained nearly everyday, next time we go the wife and 2 kids will be flying down and i’ll drive with the eldest lad.

Trolley what I meant was this. We have been visiting since Andy Seerys family had it. Our first trip was probably 1993. The club at night was the place to be with inexpensive drinks and very good entertainment. The atmosphere was very much based around family and the park and gardens spotless.
I admit the fishing was probably not as good but the entire family would really look forward to going girls and all.We met some fantastic people year after year as everyone kept going back.
Some of those people were tourers and when this was stopped to make way for more static owners vans these visitors stopped going. The entertainment now is very poor IMO and does not compare to how it used to be, in fact its so bad I cant sit in the club for a drink I tend to go outside.
I may be unfortunate also but when I speak to owners all of them seem to moan about site politics.
I still keep going back but now only for 1 week a year, it used to be 4 or 5. I know the weather these last few years has been wet and this has not helped.
In summary IMO if you like W/A now you would have loved it a few years ago before it became too commercialised. Just my opinion of course. Tight lines.

It all went downhill when they axed Mighty Maggot, LOL…

I’ve been going since the Andy Seery days. I agree that the entertainment is pretty dire compared to what it once was but, I think everything else about the place has improved.

Hire a people carrier or a van with a couple of seats in the back.

The whole sites gone down hill imo apart from the fishing of course, the chippy is crap, it’s over priced and the entertainment crap. But i will still go every year without a doubt.

It’s alright for you, Dad. You didn’t have to sit in the back of the car with two sisters complaining about the smell of the four keepnets in your lap and sack of pellets by your feet for 6 hours!

I much prefer the new option – Dad leaves home at 5am to drive down from Yorkshire with all of the gear. I roll out of bed at 9am to get a flight from Gatwick and still arrive two hours before the rest of the family!
