AnonymousHi,
Ive got a silver fish match on friday. The lake has plenty of skimmer in but pellets are banned on the lake so they wont be used to much fishmeal going their. Im struggling to find the best groundbait to use?
Any help would be appreciated -

TF_FishingbaitsFrom our customers Marukyu EFG130 has very good feedback for skimmers as does Got Baits Yellow Peril Groundbait, when used with sweetcorn.

There is no magic groundbait! Fishingbaits always promote marukyu brand, but the truth is that u have to know where to feed and how to feed to be succesfull 🙂

There were 2 brands that I recommended the EFG130 is the best of the Marukyu Groundbaits for silver fish for the cooler weather. Feedback from customers
GOT Baits Yellow Peril is nothing to do with Marukyu and has proved very successful for skimmers. Also feedback from customers.
Where did you get magic from?

And those two brand are what u selling. I’m not saying that marukyu and GOT baits are bad but I never saw u to recommend different brand than those two above.
For me personally Sonubaits F1 sweet fishmeal dark groundbait.

TF_Fishingbaits:confused: when I’m quoting feedback from our customers, you’d expect the feedback to be on products they’d bought from us

TF_baitchefParticipantIts all very well offering your opinions based on brand, but it would be more helpful if you gave reasons why you have a preference.
Its tricky to recommend without knowing what exactly you want to achieve with it.
I have had brilliant catches lately of bream and skimmers using ground vitalin.
Why do i choose vitalin, well firstly because i refuse to pay top dollar for ordinary groundbaits in fancy packaging which lets face it most of them are. Vitalin is about 90p per kilo, so it cheap.
Secondly, depending on how fine you blend it, vitalin is very versatile, because you can choose the feed content you want. You can also mix it so its active or inert.
Thirdly its quite sticky, so it holds plenty of particles if that’s what you are after.
Fourthly its cheap.
Fifthly, its reasonably easy to mix, although it will go lumpy quickly and a riddle is vital.
Sixthly its cheap.
Seventhly because its just a base mix you can add additional additives of your choice if you wish, including coulourings.
Eighthly its cheap.
Ninethly nobody else will be using you, so when you bag up you will have a psychological edge.
And lastly did I mention its cheap ?? 😀

TF_allyParticipantI would want to know more about the venue, deep or shallow, is the water clear or cloudy, are pike a problem, will you need to catch roach as well as the skimmers, how big are the skimmers and what bait are you intending to use on the hook. As you can tell from the other replies skimmers are not that fussy and you can use loads of different types and makes. I think that the consistantcy and colour are as important as the smell.

No m8 I try to say that there is plenty of good groundbait on the market, and brand is not as much important as many other factors. For example if u will throw groundbait witch is designated for lake in to fast flowing deep river u can imagine what will happen:-)

TF_redtailif they don’t see much fishmeal, I’ve always found Supercup to be an excellent skimmer groundbait

TF_Nick GilbertI tried the “Mary Q” 130 last week on a skimmer venue to see what all the hype was about!
Mixed with some softened 4mm pellet it work and I caught well over it on worm and expander pellet. Who knows I may have caught just as well feeding a cheaper fish meal based groundbait, but what I can say is the stuff certainly works.
It was easy to mix up too which was a bonus.
I have a match on there tomorrow and I intend to use it again!

TF_baitchefParticipantPure dried seaweed can be bought for as little as £5.00 per kilo with a bit of postage on top. 😀
Its nothing new. 😡 -

TF_Nick Gilbert2nd in the match yesterday using Mary Q 130 for skimmers, the winnings just about covered the cost of the groundbait 😀 😀 😀

i use a cheap green fishmeal gb that i get of a friend for about £30 for 20 kilo and just add a bit of brown crumb and have won lots of matches with this winter and summer and most of all its cheap .as baitchef says why pay a fortune when you can get good results with cheaper brands

TF_CutnutThe bulk of the groundbaits start off being cheap to produce and then maximised for greatest profit.
The ready blended just needs water bags of groundbait take the thinking out of the mix for most anglers and you are paying the provider for that service. Like it or not.
If you are prepared to make up your own recipes and spend time as if it’s free then you will always be able to make a groundbait cheaper yourself than a ‘bag of to go’ from a shop.
On most commi’s these days some amount of fishmeal or pellet will be required to attract and keep your skimmers feeding so long as you don’t mind the occasional carp crashing the party.
A Sweet mix relatively inactive will in the main reduce the likelyhood of the carp poking their noses in. On my local pools the skimmers seem to like a sweet dark mix just active enough to cause a fizz when they turn up. When that happens you come off the deck and present a slow fall bait and look for either a hold up or a hold up followed by a definite dunk 😉
From the shops I’ve used Sensas Noire and gardons with bremes in an equal thirds mix. I particularly like to use pastonchino red and yellow flakes in the mix too. On commi’s where a lot of boillies are used crush up some tutti frutti’s and strawberry ones.
Bag’em Dark Skimmer is a good out of the bag mix.
Vitalin was always my choice in the old days when reservoirs were my haunts for big bream and tench…cheap as chips but you do need to put time in the equation to prepare it.
Layers Mash sieved of the grains makes a good bulk up.
Codlivine is a good additive but sparingly in winter.
NAF seaweed can be bought from most feedstores that supply Horse feed, shop around and you will get it in refill bags, you don’t need much in the mix of layers mash and crumb.Currently I take the simple route of out of the bag…but I used to enjoy concocting a mix and seeing how it went.
