Disappointment for England on tough venue.
England’s veteran and disabled teams have returned from their respective World Championships in Bosnia without a medal. The veterans World Championship was won by Italy, and the Czech Republic lifted the winners trophy in the disabled category.
England’s best result came from Daiwa Dorking skipper, Steve Sanders, who finished in fourh place individually in the veterans category, winning the match individually on the first day. In the team stakes, England finished sixth in the veterans category and eighth in the disabled.
Top Southern rod John Weedon was coach for the disabled team for the week, and explained: “The venues for both World Championships were very similar – and frankly a little disappointing. To give a comparison that English anglers might recognise, the venue was very much like the Warwickshire Avon at Evesham, but deeper. Frustratingly, a lot of the swims had bad snags in them, making fishing difficult. It wasn’t particularly disabled friendly either – with some of the pegs being over three metres off the water.
Consequently, the venue was very peggy – and avoiding the snag pits was essential. Sadly, both teams drew a handful of bad pegs on the first day – putting us out of the race before it had even started.”
