AnonymousHi all, I’m off to Somerset for the week next week, to fish a 4 day festival type event. I’m from Birmingham, and have been travelling down to Viaduct for a weeks match fishing twice a year, for the past 3/4 years.
The only source of information i get about the fishery is off the net, or if i phone the owner Steve/Ian. So any info is needed.
Were fishing Campbell & Careys over the 4 days…anybody tell me some up to date tactics?
The last match result i seen was 203lb on pellet waggler shallow.
Any info is much appreciated!

bodgeParticipantkeep it simple mate you will need pellet, pellet and more pellet. oh and a little bit of paste too.
pellet wag or bomb is scoring well with the pole down the edge if your on the right peg (corners usually!) you can catch on the pole long infromt of you both on the deck and then shallow. depends where you are. cambells is usually better for that as they are smaller fish. take PLENTY of 8mls and 10s are needed if itd windy. i personally domt bother with 6s but if you intend to fish the pole the they may be ok. -

TF_whatsaroachSpoke to Ian today Fished iffy over weekend due to sun and calm surface ! Good weights still but you need a ripple. 8mm pellet and fish the wag as it’s still going to be warm or shallow on the pole is working on campbell

AnonymousThanks lads!!
Every year we go down it always seems to be pretty much the same, long pole shallow, waggler – as said above.
I was down there for a 5 day event in June, and all the locals were going on about the ‘conker’. Where i come from – the Midlands, no one has ever heard of the Conker! So it was hilarious when we finally found out what the conker was! Match men in the Midlands have been fishing the Conker for months, but we don’t call it the ‘conker’.
I just bought a sack of 8mm pellets, and have some 4mm on order to try something different.
What about pegs? When ever we fish Campbells, the pegs to draw always seem to be from aerator down – so the bottom half of the lake. The top half is much dreaded to be honest!
Thanks for the info lads.

Anonymousjhipkiss, just make sure that if bodge is with you on the same match then have a pound with him. You’ll be a quid up before you even feed a pellet or paste line…..

TF_dave brittainI’ve sent you an email giving details on all the pegs, it’s the same info I sent Neil McKinnon prior to Fisho so it should stand you in good stead.
Also see this link regarding the pellet waggler http://www.fishing-world.co.uk/toptips.html

TF_dave brittainOne thing I forgot to mention is that they’ve been fishing the conker for around four years at Stafford Moor. It was only in last years Fisho that a few lads tried it and found that it worked very well.
It will still take a lot to beat a good shallow angler on the waggler or the pole and that how I’d fish apart from the corner pegs where your options may be limited.
As for Campbel lake, a good angler can win from almost anywhere with the exception of the corners, however they also win a lot of matches especially if the wind is blowing into them.

AnonymousDave, that document is priceless!!! Thanks for all the info.
The website link will make a good read on my lunch later.
A fair few of the blokes who fish with us are Maver sponsored commercial anglers, who excel most at shallow water fishing, and the rest are Sensas Dams & Lock sponsored anglers, so the weeks fishing is taken very seriously.
One thing i might add; The Angling Times and the like regularly show 200lb+ winning weights, but yet 150lb wins most of our matches at Viaduct, is this just down to the angler being familiar with the pegs or are they doing something different/special?
Thanks for all the info.

TF_dave brittainJames.
Some of the best anglers in the South West fish Viaduct, (Des Ship, Tony Rixon, Alex Murray, Steve Mayo, Andy Power, Andy Lloydd, Steve Denmeade, Josh and Paul Garrett, etc), and then on top of that there are the venue experts, who tend to excel at certain methods and rarely go anywhere else.
All of the above are very hard to beat and know the venue very well, which accounts for the big weights, however pegging will also play a big part in the winning weight.
If every peg is in, 150lbs will be a very good weight, however if it’s pegged so that you have 2 out of 3 pegs in, ie. 1&2, 4&5, 7&8, etc, 200lbs should be on the cards but only if conditions and anglers approach is right. You don’t need a lot of fish to get 200lbs and it’s important to make every fish count.
There is nothing special in what I or the other anglers do to get big weights, as it is something that we do week in, week out, due to being spoilt by the quality of some of the venues down here. You do have to be geared up for it and approach it correctly. Anybody who thinks that it’s a race will be onto a looser before they start as you have to keep the fish coming for the duration of the match, making sure every fish counts. Five fish an hour is a good target and will generally have you there or thereabouts come the end of the match.

Would there be any chance that I could get a copy of your email about Viaduct? I have a match there the beginning of October, so any info would be greatly received.
Thanks
Dave

AnonymousDave, i don’t doubt the quality & ability of you or the other anglers mentioned, and there is no better skill than having the knowledge of the water/peg, although there are some people who are naturally gifted.
I would love the opportunity to sit behind you, or any of the above names just to gain some knowledge. The fishing in the South is some what different to the fishing and styles in the Midlands. There is no doubt about that. I’m hoping to get there a little earlier on Sunday, to see the weigh-in at Viaduct.
Re: pegging. We always let either Steve oIan from Viadut peg the water…they know the water best right?
There’s 19 of us fishing the matches, so most pegs will have to be in unfortunately. Just luck of the draw i guess.
Other than Viaduct and Stafford Moor, where else do you go in your area?
We used to frequent Avalon fisheries, and i personally love the place, prettiest fishery you will ever see! But alot of people moaned about the fishing, it was always won on the method which is my style of fishing.
Last time i was there, it had just been sold to the Team Mosella boss? I can’t remember his name right now. Any idea how it fishes now? -

TF_dave brittainWith 19 of you fishing, 150lbs will be a good weight on Campbel however you may need more on Carey, depending on who draws where.
Locally, I tend to stick to Stafford Moor and Viaduct as you’re guaranteed decent turn outs and the standard of angling is very good.
As soon as the rivers come into form I’ll be off up to the Wye because if it fishes any where as well as it did last year it will be awsome.
Vic Bush bought into Avalon, however I have never fished there, although a lot of anglers have told me that it would suit me.
With regard to Viaduct I’ll probably get a few matches in there over the next few months as the summer league at Stafford Moor finishes next week.

AnonymousWe always talk about booking some matches at Stafford Moor, as the reports are always awesome, but we just simply love Viaduct, and were only down for a week.
I’ve never fished a river in my life…i learnt my fishing on commercials watching my dad and Andy Findlay, although i used to run the bank on the Barford/Stratford Avon winter league.
Do the Garratts still catch decent weights at Viaduct? Their names were always well up there when we was last there, we was told they fish the paste?
Any recommendations on the paste mix? -

bodgeParticipantdave, why havent you mentioned the purple plonker?? the viaduct master!!!

TF_dave brittainBodge, it took me a while to suss it out, but I think I know who you mean. He is a very good angler and I get on with him quite well, so we’ll leave it at that.
As for Paul, Josh and Carl they still fish at Viaduct and are usually there or thereabouts. Paste doesn’t tend to do as well as it used to as the silvers can be a pain so I’d stick with pellet, 8mm for the waggler and 6/8mm for the pole.
Josh and Andy Power catch a lot of fish on the pole using 8mm pellet on the deck, however the waggler does dominate a lot of matches, especially if those around you fish the pole.
As for the paste recipe there were no secrets as Paul only used plain sillybait. As I said there are no secrets, just anglers who know exactly what they are doing.

AnonymousDave, thanks for all your advice above. We, especially myself, had an awesome weeks fishing. Viaduct fished its head off 3 out of the 4 days.
Your advice was spot on.
Here’s a little report:
Match 1 – Peg 124 Campbells, I had 130lb, finished 4th. 150lb won it from peg 132ish.
Match 2 – Peg 118 Campbells, I had 248lb and won the match. My dad was 2nd with 190lb off peg 119, and loads of back up weights. 120lb never got in top 6.
Match 3 – drew on Loodge lake which fished hard, finished 2nd on lake with 66lb.
Match 4 – drew peg 125 on Campbells, had 149lb which won the match, 110lb 2nd.
I asked about entering the winter league, but its fully booked! I was willing to make the 2hr drive down every match as well!
Thanks again.
Awesome fishery! Best in Country!
Hope it’s as good when its sold! -

TF_dave brittainYou’ve had three very good draws on Campbel, however the 248lbs is one of the best weights this year so well done.
I’m glad you had a good week and that it fished well as there are occasions when you’d think that there aren’t a lot of fish in there however naybody who knows it well will tell you that when it does fish it can be very good.

AnonymousYes, i drew decent pegs all week. Although it did seem the fish were evenly spread across Campbells. The weights were consistant all the way around.
On the drive home, we stopped by at ‘Cider Farm Fishery’, the venue certainly looks impressive, and the weights look good match weights, but you ever fished there?
We’re considering booking a weeks matches for June. -
17/09/2007 at 8:47 am #63617
TF_dave brittainI haven’t fished Cider Farm however I have heard some very good reports on the venue and there are several anglers wh are of the opinion that it will become one of the best commercials in the South West.
I dare say that I’ll be paying a visit in the near future.
