Sunday i went sea fishing for the first time this yr,(i usually go carp fishing)with my dad and our neighbour.
my dad caught a couple of whiting and a couple of codling,i had 5 codling a basslett and a whiting and my neighbour had 4 codling and a couple of whiting.
myself and my dad kept non of our codling or fish they were all returned… they were all about a 1.4lb-1.8 lb size, my neighbour kept all his,and a trip the night before he kept them as well.
reading catch reports from diff sites with pictures of catches are people really fooling themselfs on the size of the fish they catch?.
some people call a 1lb and ounces fish sizable, and keep it,when ud never get a decent fillet from it,well maybe a fillet of a few ounces.
im noticeing people calling a 1lb an ounces size fish 2-3lb and beyond.
have fish really shrunk that much it used too be the case of a 3lb codling had too be a lot bigger than it is now.

I personally think that because we haven’t seen a run of codling like this in a few years people are taking more, just beacause we dont see them that often

          For eg.

If someone caught 2 bass that were just sizeable i like to think that they would put them back, unless like Ada said they were deep hooked but if someone caught 2 codling just sizeable they would keep them, IMOH

Not saying i wouldn’t take a fish home but a ‘just sizeable’ fish for me is undersize unless damaged/injured/dead

Caught and released my first cod of the season this week, 1.5 lbs not very plump, better fish to come, had to explain to my wife that filleted it would been a fishfinger each.

Yep, a waste of time, bit like them telling you what to do!
