Today, sunny and windy! On one side sea was choppy and on the other water was clear. Summer frenzy is back with plenty of pelagic fish around feeding. In a few weeks the queen fish will start to feed and the GT’s I saw today feeding was probably too big to target on 40lb handline line! 😉
My friend had about 40 anchoivies which I kept in a small dropnet for live bait. Caught some decent gars when freelining anchoivies, biggest 60cm. The usual halfbeaks but there was a surprise! After an hour fishing, two mullet from nowhere got near my ground bait which were intended to keep the halfbeak feeding. Shy and I wasn’t expected them to feed among the reefs, which they didn’t (for a while) but after a landed a few fish I saw one having a nibble at the bread paste. I wasn’t interested but the two continued to feed. I was fishing with a 6lb mono snood with a size 18 hook, which instead of presenting a top water bread crust, I lowered a bread flake which sank slowly. The fish was clearly interested and started nibbling after a short while, I connected with the fish gently.
Never again, with no net this was a bad idea from me. Fought it for a few mins and the fish was still moving about when I brought it near enough for my friend to lift it. Measured it with a piece of rope which I measured when I got home, about 43cm.
