          roachie44,
why not try a ball of groundbait laced with hemp, casters and chopped worms put in with the cupping kit and to one side of your swim and then if it does not produce you have the rest of the swim to try other feeding methods.
          good luck, cormorant.
by the way are bloodworm and joker allowed? if they are try and get yourself a match pack.

blood worm and joker are banned i think, like the idea of 2 swims, ive seen lots of top river guys ball in even in winter and wondered if it was worth 5-6 balls and waiting, maybe better stamp, but youve gotta catch all match to win on the roach just incase someone sits out for bream and nabs a couple cos they are fairly big.

If Roach win, you’ll probably be better off giving it one hard bombardment balling in to start with and a fair amount of losefeed in the mix. You’ll find that you’ll catch to start and then mayby it will slow down a touch, but with there being enough feed down from your initial feed, Roach will always come back over that feed, you’ll only need to top up small amounts or start losefeeding once your initial burst of fish has gone to bring them back.

cheers guys, whats your views on best ground bait? bearing in mind this is a lake not a river.

Roach & Silver Fish + Gardons or Gros Gardons if the roach are of a decent size, I’d riddle the larger bits out of both the mixes personally prefering to add food to the mix purely for the fact you know what has gone in. If the fishing was harder and the water clearer you could try Black Lake and Gardons noire.

If you’re after a decent weight of good sized roach, say all over 2oz. Then use GB as suggested. If you’re after less than 10lb, and lots of the roach will be less than 2oz, mix the GB 50/50 with damp leam to cut down the food content.
Also worth trying around a dozen balls of the mix, followed by two or three balls of lightly squeezed damp leam to make an instant cloud and pull all the roach from surrounding pegs.

Basically, if you’re going to do it, do it properly and accept that you might blow out. If it works, you will have a cracking match.

cheers steve, there is a good stamp of roach, ive had results with hemp castor but wondered on balling, not done it so hoping it may draw a better stamp, or bonus bream and there are some big perch, would you add chop or steer clear and just add castor hemp?

With 7 or 8 feet of water to play with. Why not give balling in ground bait a go but after the first rush of fish. Attempt to bring the roach up in th water and catch them on the drop. They should come up and feed confidently in that depth of water and you often get the better stamp of roach in that way as well. The balling in will attract the roach to start with but it will also give you a better chance of attracting those bonus bream and tench. Just a case of keeping an eye out for those tell tail signs of bigger fish in your peg and having a quick look on the deck every so often with a bigger bait like double or triple caster or a full worm.
