Report:
This has to be one of the strangest matches we have had on Lake Two.
After a bitterly cold night, the venue was white with frost and the temperature remained below freezing as the match started. The lake was ice free excepting for the corner by peg A18 (the angler that drew it was moved to A19).
At the draw everyone wanted the high numbers on the “A” bank. Most of the early pegs drawn were “B” numbers, and as each came out of the bag there were groans of displeasure. It just shows how wrong we were, as every angler on the “B” bank caught fish, as well as experiencing “line bites”, while only one angler on the favoured “A” bank had a bite. The fish had obviously moved to the other side of the lake. Andy Findlay on peg A11 recorded his first ever blank on the lake in thirty years. The bitterly cold NE wind contributed greatly to the poor results.
Top on the day, and having a great run of form, was Steve Foster on peg B14. Steve fished bomb throughout the day and landed four carp (one was a real unit) for 21-02 and a clear win.
Second place went to another in form angler, Phil Hunt, who on peg B21 hooked four carp on bomb and bread, unfortunately only landing two, which weighed 8-09. As we paid out a winner and then (default) winners on each side of the lake, Phil took the “B” bank prize.
Third place and winner of the “A” bank was the only angler on that side of the lake to have a bite! Organiser John Adamson was not pleased to draw peg A7, the shallowest peg in the match, but two early fish on bomb and bread (first a good chub and then a carp) totalling 7-08 was easily enough to win the “A” bank pool.
Fourth place went to Gaz Kitch (peg B17) with a carp weighing 6-10, with Joe Caress’s carp (peg B24) enough for fifth place with 5-05. The other angler on the B bank caught fish (and lost one) but did not weigh.
Many thanks to both Gaz Cook and Gaz Kitch for help with the scales. The photos show the top two.
NB. Nisa Opens are held every Wednesday on Lake Two at Makins Fishery (see Facebook “Nisa – midweek open matches” to book a place).
