Hi Tony
All depends on the rod, you tend to get what you pay for
I have two rods, both 4 piece because i tend to take them on holiay with me and they are much easier to travel with due to the smaller pack size.
as a rule most ‘travel’ 4 piece rods will suit the more advance fly caster due to the less forgiving action (i.e. Orvis frequent flyer) but my cheaper rod a fulling mill 4 piece is great for me and I am a numpty caster!
With all rods, a good seller wil let you have a cast with a demo rod to check out the action, rod design is so good that i have a greys missionary spin rod, 6 piece that has no flat spts and is a dream to use, i guess you pays your money and you take your pick.
