TF_geepsterParticipantContrary to the story in today’s Times newspaper, the Angling Trust has not called for a cull of otters. This part of the story is completely untrue and we wish to reassure anglers and the general public about this urgently. The person quoted as being an Angling Trust spokesman is not an employee or spokesman of the organisation, and says that he has never spoken to The Times. The journalist did not contact the Trust to verify the ‘story’.
The Angling Trust office has received many e-mails and telephone calls about this subject today, all of which have expressed dismay at these reports. The comments on the Times web site and from members of the public demonstrate the strength of public feeling about this issue, and the damage that would be done to angling if anglers were ever to call for a cull.
Mike Heylin, Chairman of the Angling Trust, has written to the paper’s editor demanding a retraction and apology.
Angling Trust is campaigning vigorously on behalf of all anglers to ensure that our rivers are healthy enough to support populations of both otters and fish. We have also lobbied the Environment Agency to release funds to help fisheries to fence their waters, and otherwise deter otters, if practicable.

TF_caster robParticipantWhat a poorly researched and inaccurate piece of journalism.
It unequivocally states:
“Chris Burt, of the Angling Trust, which represents 1.4million anglers,……………………………”
I ask you!

lewisPleased the AT are saying they had nothing to do with the story. I read a quote hinting that the otter could cause the 1.1billion pound coarse fishing industry to collapse in five years. I thought it wasn’t exactly a piece of PR genious.
LOL @ Caster Rob – it speaks for 1.4m anglers, whether they have given them consent or backing is irrelevant I guess.
And PTB I agree, it is a toffs paper, and it’s crap most of the time but they got some cracking pics of John Terry’s new bird.
But I go to a toffs gym, and there’s always a copy in the sauna. It sells more copies per day than the annual rod license sales complete. At least it did a few years’ back. -

TF_GaryI recently read “Flat Earth News” (http://www.flatearthnews.net/), a very good read, which provides a fascinating insight into the workings of the British media. It is written by Nick Davies of the Observer, so you have to gloss over the loony-lefty drivel, but there is some amazing content.
It provides an explanation for how rubbish like this ends up in newspapers; not least because the punishment for getting it wrong is so disproportionately small. As someone else has said above, they will print a tiny “in erratum” in the middle of the paper, where no one will see it. Part of this is down to the ludicrously inadequate self-regulation that the print-media is subject to.

TF_GaryThe whole “John Terry scandal” epitmosises it for me. The media, particularly the print press, will villify him and call for his head and demand that Wayne Rooney is installed as England captain, conveniently forgetting that a couple of years ago it has Rooney that was on the front pages for all of the wrong reasons.
There is a simple answer – DON’T BUY NEWSPAPERS.
